Roger Clemens is back in Houston. He hates it that he isn't still playing baseball this post-season ....but he's also leaving the door wide-open for a possible return next season. Clemens was out at the Administaff Small Business Classic Pro_Am watching his wife Debbie play. He told me he's glad he went back to New York and tried to go to the World Series ....despite falling short. "No question we turned the team around. I batled through injuries over my last 8 to 10 starts but that's to be expected at my age." Clemens said he went back to New York in large part to help guys like Alex Rodriguez get "the ring." But he says A-Rod and his teammates rejuventated him in many ways. When I asked him if that last strikeout he recorded in Game 3 of the ALCS was his last ever at the Major League ever ....He said,"Well, Matt you know I'm not very good at this stuff ..and Arnold, Arnold Palmer told me again today ... Hey if they don't figure it out ....they'll be calling you to get off the couch again next year." He laughed when I said Hall of Famer Johnny Bench was going to be giving his advice on his playing future again this week while he's in town. (The two are hosting the Johnny and the Rocket charity event) Clemens said,"Yeah ...he knows I have this down to a half season deal now." Which is correct. Despite a torn hamstring that he has now ......who out there would be totally surprised if it doesn't try it again next year for another half season stint. Clemens told me that he's already communicated with Astros owner Drayton McLane and McLane plans on Roger being in Kississimmee next spring as an instructor. The question is ...where could that lead?? |
