At the annual Bayou Bucket luncheon today retired trainers Tom Wilson of UH and Alan Eggart of Rice were honored for all their years of service. These two great men took care of generations of young athletes as they passed through our local schools and they did so with care and class. I have known both gentlemen since I arrived in Houston back in 1980. No one ....and I mean no one was more loyal to their respective programs than these two. I got to know Tom well during the Phi Slamma Jama days ...... but his athletes knew him best .... especially the football players for his off=season workouts. As he said today,"I'm proud to say not one athlete died on my practice field while I was in charge and not one athlete was paralyzed during my tenure despite the fact that we had two players break their necks." He said it in a salute to his great athletes ..... but clearly crusty, old Tom .....as some would call him...played a major role in that statistic. I got to know Alan well traveling with the Rice teams through the years while performing play by play duties. Alan is a special guy and he treated all of his student athletes and trainers as his own. Congratulations Tom and Alan ..... you're two of the best men I've ever met.
