October 2007 ArchivesThe Rockets got down to their league mandated 15 man roster Monday by waiving Center Jackie Butler, Guard John Lucas, Forward Justin Reed and Guard Bob Sura. Little Luke got caught up in a numbers game after averaging only 3 opints a game this pre-season. Reed was part of the Mike James deal. Butler was a throw-in as part of the deal that brought Luis Scola over from the Spurs and Bob Sura hadn't played the past two seasons after suffering a ruptured disc in his back in November of 2005. Okay ...that takes care of all the roster moves ....but what about Stevie Franchise?? And how come he n... Texans head coach Gary Kubiak walked off the practice field and told reporters that the indication that he has received is that the Texans/Chargers game will be played Monday night in San Diego. He repeated his belief that the biggest concern has to continue to be the citizens in the San Diego area .....but he believes the game will be played Monday night in San Diego. If that happens he also added the team will definatelyl return to Houston before playing at Oakland the following week. It has been widely speculated that the Texans may stay on the west coast if they had to push the Chargers game to Monday night.... While we wait with the Texans to hear the word out of San Diego about this weekend's game .... I can tell you this. Matt Schaub and Sage Rosenfels were both throwing passes during position stations while we were able to shoot video today ......and then when the Texans went to 11 on 11 drills ..... Schaub was the first quarterback in .....followed by Rosenfels. A lot of things can happen between now and gametime .....but judging by the way he's moving around in practice ..... I wouldn't be at all surprised if Schaub is the starter versus the Chargers.... and not many people around here thought that could happen a ... The Houston Texans began practice at 11:50am still not knowing for sure where they would be playing their upcoming game against the San Diego Chargers. All the players I spoke with this morning were adamant about being ready to play no matter where the game is. They all understand that San Diego does not want to come to Houston to play this game. The Chargers are only 3 and 3 on the season after being picked by many to be Super Bowl contenders so they need to win every game. Of course the same can be said for the 3 & 4 Texans. No one was picking them for the Super Bowl but after starting out 2... Texans head coach Gary Kubiak says injured quarterback Matt Schaub is day to day after seeing doctors again today. Kubiak says everything came back negative ...the X-rays and the MRI but Schaub is hurting. His ankle, his back and his hip are all sore along with his thigh bruise that he had been nursing for a few weeks now. The team was deeply concerned about Schaub's hip ....but again the MRI was negative. Kubiak says he has no problem if he has to start Sage Rosenfels at San Diego. Kubiak says the team is looking for another quarterback. The search will begin with free agent rookie Jared Zabransky. Z...

A make wins it for the Titans .... Kerry Collins completes a long pass deep into Texans territory with :31 seconds left. No vince will not come in to lead the comeback for Tennessee. After tying the score at 35 all .....Kris Brown just kicked the extra pont to untie the game. The Texans have just taken the lead!!!! After a touchdown pass from Sage Rosenfels to Jeb Putzier ... The Texans have lost this one ...and I'm headed to the locker room to talk to the players. I'm sure they're going to be in a great mood. Number 10 ... Titans quarterback Vince Young is still ailing from a strained quadraceps muscle ...and even though Kerry Collins was sacked early and the fumble was returned for a score .....Young never took off his Titans baseball cap. Collins did a good job of running the conservative Titans attack ...just like head coach Jeff Fisher wanter ...and the Titans are headed to a victory. You know Vince wanted to play in front of his family and hometown friends ....but I'm sure he's happy his team came to town and got the victory just the same. ...The official attendance today ..again was 70,734. It's something like the 56th straight sellout in team history. But what the NFL doesn't do anymore is list no-shows. And the Texans had plenty today. When fans figured out Vince Young wasn't playing today ....they stayed away in droves. Bironas just kicked another field goal ...his record tying 7th of the day. Texans defense force the punt ...take over at their own 12 yard line. This game is over. David Anderson was returning the punt for the Texans ..and the 2nd year player out of Colorado State .....muffed the punt and Tennessee recovers at the Texans 33. Former 1st round draft pick Travis Johnson had 2 passes knocked down to his credit ...and a big tackle on this last running play ....but now the big man is down on the field shaken up. He now leaves under his own power. The defense has played a lot of plays today due to the ineffective offense. Rosenfels to Kevin Walter for the TD ..... No flags!!! No flags ....Rosenfels completes long ball to Walter to midfield. Rosenfels completes long pass downfield ....but is called back with iliegal substitution thanks to Jordan Black. It may be too little too late ....but the Texans force a Titans punt ....... Rosenfels catches his first ever NFL TD pass as the Texans get their first offensive touchdown of the day. Texans going for two ...... and Rosenfels hits Andre Davis ...for the conversion. It's Tennessee 32 .... Texans 15 with 13:43 left in the 4th. It's the end of the 3rd ...and already one gets the feeling that the Texans are just playing for respectability on the scoreboard. If that's possible. Sage finally gets a completion to his own team ...and the remaining fans .... give him a loud mock cheer!! Now Ahman Green has run for a first down ....and the fans cheer loudly again.!! They obviously are very frustrated. ... Chris Henry scores from 4 yards out ...... Titans go up 32 to 7 ..with the extra point ...and the fans are headed to the exits!!! ... On a 1st down pass play ....after Ben Hartsock catches the pass from Collins ... Robinson levels him. Dunte never stops playing hard no matter what the score. !! Texans have mustered only 34 yards of offense thus far. 21 rushing ...and 13 passing. Matt Schaub stays on the sideline ...with a hip and ankle inury. Rob Bironas hits on a 43 yard field goal attempt. Rosenfels gets picked off again ....this time by Nick Harper at the Texans 30 yard line ...One interception and one fumble in the first half ....it has to get better ... right?? The Texans have looked out of sync all day long offensively ....and the Kerry Collins led offense has made the Texans defense look bad .... all day long. The Texans have had one good play on defense ....when DeMeco Ryans sacked Collins stripped him of the ball and returned it for a touchdown ....other than that ....they've been sleep walking all day long. Rob Bironas caps off the 1st half scoring with a 28 yard field goal. Texans on the verge of back-sliding into another defeat here today. Texans backup QB sage Rosenfels fumbles on his first snap ..in for Schaub ....Keith Bullock and returns it to the Texans 32 yard line. ... Haynesworth hits Schaub late ...and gets flagged ....Schaub gets planted. Schaub is down for the count. Schaub got roughed up early ...and to leave the game for a series ......but he's down now .....just now being helped off the field ...and here comes Rosenfels again. ... Travis Johnson has his 2nd pass breakup of the day..as he knocks down the pass at the line of scrimmage. That forces a field goal attempt. Bironas kicks one through from 30 yards out. Titans lead 19 to 7. ...Geez ....get some offense going!!! #3rd down conversion for Collins and company.....completion to Bo Scaife .... 2 minute warning!!!! ...TExans can't move the ball .... Collins gets drilled just as he releases the ball ...by Danny Clark ...but they gain positive yards on the screen pass. Texans getting riddled by the Titans offense currently ....they need to force a turnover to stop this. Travis Johnson deflects Collins pass ....nice play. ...Collins completes the pass to Justin Gage ...nice throw by Collins. Another nice connection downfield by Collins ....this one to Bo Scaife. Titans are moving ......well this possession. Titans with the ball and a two point lead ....9 to 7. Schaub back in for Texans at QB .....hands it off on 1st down .... 3rd down completion to Andre Davis ....but still Thunderfoot ...Matt Turk will have to punt. Chris Davis back to return ...but the ball bounces away from him .....and the Titans take over at their own 23. ... It's a battle of backup quarterbacks with Collins for Tennessee and Rosenfels for the Texans. Thus far neither has impressed .....but thanks to the great defensive play by Ryans the Texans lead. Nice strike downfield ....by Collins to Roydell Williams to the Texans 10 yard line. Mario Williams is horrible at this point. Can't get a pass rush ...and gets killed on the running plays ....always gets blocked out ...with one exception today. Rob Bironas just connects on the 21 yard field goal ....Titans lead 9 to 7. TExans penalized illegal motion on 3rd down ...now it's 3rd and 15. The first quarter ends with Sage Rosenfels making a great throw to Owen Daniels but OD drops the ball. Texans up 7 to 6. Texans receive kickoff ...... Titans attmepting a 25 yard field goal by Rob Bironas ..... Titans driving ...after the interception of Sage Rosenfels ......by Nick Harper. Schaub sacked and injured ....Riosenfels in at quarterback ....and he's intercepted. by Nick Harper .....Bad throw. Texans back on offense .....they haven't a running game since early in the season ....let's see what they can do here with great field position at the 42 yard line. Titans get the ball back on the kickoff .....trailing by 4. Demeco Ryans has come to play!!!! Thunderfoot ....Matt Turk ...just uncorked a long punt ....putting Tennessee back on their own 39 yard line. This guy is unbelievably good as a weapon. ...Demeco Ryans actually recovered that last fumble .....it was just announced in the press box. Titans fumble it right back ....after a pass completion .....Faggins and others hit the receiver ...he coughs it up ..and ND Kalu ....recovers. Texans take over the ball. Kubiak loses the challenge ...and the Titans are back in great field position. Jacoby Jones got the start at wide receiver .....caught the first pass for a loss though. ND Kalu pressures Collins ....and incomplete pass on 3rd down .... 2 straight passes and two straight completions for qb Kerry Collins. Vince Young not scheduled to start. Titans win the toss ...will receive and defned the south endzone. Thursday night Cy-Falls High School takes on Cy-Fair High School in a nationally televised football game on ESPN2. This game was an attractive matchup for the Disney Sports channel for many reasons .......but the main one was the chance to showcase Cy-Fair running back Sam McGuffie versus a top-notch opponent. Cy-Falls was a State hampionship Finalist last year. The good news for everyone who wants to either watch the game on TV or attend the game at the Berry Center ....is that McGuffie is once again healthy ...and capable of putting on a great show. Sam rushed for 287 yards last week and 273 yards the... Roger Clemens is back in Houston. He hates it that he isn't still playing baseball this post-season ....but he's also leaving the door wide-open for a possible return next season. Clemens was out at the Administaff Small Business Classic Pro_Am watching his wife Debbie play. He told me he's glad he went back to New York and tried to go to the World Series ....despite falling short. "No question we turned the team around. I batled through injuries over my last 8 to 10 starts but that's to be expected at my age." Clemens said he went back to New York in large part to help guys like Alex Rodriguez get "the ring." ... At the annual Bayou Bucket luncheon today retired trainers Tom Wilson of UH and Alan Eggart of Rice were honored for all their years of service. These two great men took care of generations of young athletes as they passed through our local schools and they did so with care and class. I have known both gentlemen since I arrived in Houston back in 1980. No one ....and I mean no one was more loyal to their respective programs than these two. I got to know Tom well during the Phi Slamma Jama days ...... but his athletes knew him best .... especially the football players for his off=season workouts. As h... DAvid Anderson didn't have a job one week ago .....wow!! Brown good from 57 yards out .....texans win texans win ....are you kidding me???? Texans will win this 22 to 19!!!! Schaub to Daniels to the 37 yard line .... Are they playing for overtime??? Dolphins change their collective mind and punt in the person of Brandon Fields.... After missing a long bomb to walter ....Schaub hooks up with him for a first down. Dexter Wynn ....had a big hole to the left side ...but instead of running to daylight ....he ran into the darkness of the Miami defenders and the Texans will take over at the 34 yard line instead of farther down field. I think the Texans need to pickup Darren Sproles of the Chargers. He can return kicks and is a good little running back. He's running 3rd string last I checked. FEeley with a 48 yard field goal atempt is good .....Miami is back up 19 to 16. Danny Clark guilty of holding ....gives Miami first down. Ronnie Brown already has rushed for 100 yards .... ...Two cpmplete passes by Schaub ......but Michale Leehan just made a nice play knocking down a pass intended for Walter. Kris Brown just hiton another 54 yard field goal.!!! Amobe Okoye wiht a nice tackle to thwart the Dolphins effort on 3rd down .....Texans get the ball on the punt ........Houston will accept a 10 yard penalty assessed against the Dolphins for offensive holding on the punt. Houston first down at the 23 yard line. ...Mario Williams gets a sack his 7 1/2 for the season .....with his left arm pulling the QB down by his shirttail. ...Brown jusst made mario Williams look silly on an outside move ...dolphins convert on 3rd down ......nice play ...Kris brown kicks a 43 yard field goal.... Dolphins 16 .... Texans 13 ... Backup quarterback Cleo Lemon is in for the Dolphins and he's playing rather well. Texans trailing 13 to 7 to the Dolphins Trent Green is out of the Texans/Miami game due to a concussion. It was just announced in the Reliant Stadium press box. Green was attempting to block Texans defensive lineman Travis Johnson and his head hit Johnson in the knee. Green lay motionless on the ground .....while Johnson stood over hiim and taunted him. apparantly Johnson thought Green was going for his knee ....but whatever the case ....because of his taunting action ....the Dolphins got a first down. There should have been a big loss on the play. Green was taken off the field on a stretcher .....after play was halted for nearly 15 minutes. ... |
