September 2007 ArchivesCraig Biggio was drafted in 1987 as a catcher. He became the first Astros catcher to ever be named to the National League All-Star team in 1991 but during that season former General Manager Bill Wood told me that he and others in the organization felt like Biggio's future was at 2nd base. Biggio possessed that rare combination at the catcher position. He had an adequate arm ....and was a good receiver at the position...but offensively he was off the charts great. He hit for average ...had occasional power and possessed great speed. The problem was though ... as Wood saw it .... he would lose his speed ... The first time I met Ed Wade was 1980. He was the Astros media relations director and he gave me my first Astros pass. I remember back in those days Ed would walk around alot wearing a dark blue warmup jacket adorned with the Astros rainbow colored stripes. I think he wore it to better deal with the cool temperatures inside the Astrodome back then. Ed originally was hired by the late Donald Davidson as a media relations assistant ...in 1979 he was named the media relations director. He kept the job until 1981 ...when he moved on to Pittsburgh to take the same job there. He's a Pennsylvania native an... Houston Texan fans were burning up the phone lines Monday to chat about Sunday's impressive win over the Carolina Panthers.
Okay .... Astros manager Cecil Cooper hasn't won every game ..... but he certainly manages his players differently doesn't he?? Coop and Gar (Phil Garner) are longtime friends ...... but even though they spent 2 1/2 seasons together in the Astros dugout ..... it's obvious they're approach to managing the game is alot different. When Cooper was named to the manager's spot .... he told me that he didn't want to say anything bad about Gar .... but he did believe that Phil managed the team differently the first season and a half compared to last year and this. He felt like Phil was more aggressive with his ... |
