Now that Jeff Van Gundy is gone, can you believe there's talk Bonzi Wells wants to rejoin the team? In some quarters the idea is not too far fetched since Wells played for Rick Adelman in Sacramento. But forget about it.
How can you welcome a player back who quit on a team during a stretch drive to the playoffs. Bonzi wasn't brought in to start for the Rockets, but rather to bolster the bench and be a scoring option when Yao or Tracy sat down.
Where was Bonzi when only four Rockets scored in game three of their playoff series with Jazz? Home watching TV.
There are parallels when Vernon Maxwell quit on the team during the Rockets second title run in 1995. Mad Max had some awesome skills, but he also had a lot of baggage. When he walked away from the Rockets in Utah during a playoff game, that team didn't look back and won a championship.
This Rockets team tried to look back, but sorely missed a guy who could have provided some offensive punch when they were in a crunch against the Jazz.
How does Bonzi tell a coach now I'm your guy? What would a coach expect out of Bonzi when the team is in another tight spot. Could the Rockets, or any team for that matter get the best out of him, or will he just go through the motions?
The time for Bonzi was in late April when the Rockets had to win as many games as they could to secure the home court advantage. He wasn't there then, so there should be no time for Bonzi now.
