In Mexico with Dynamo

I'm in Pachuca, Mexico with photographer Ernesto Torres as we cover the exploits of the Houston Dynamo soccer team. Dynamo coach Dominic Kinnear had his players go through a short walk through this evening in the rain outside of the team hotel. The Dynamo will have their only full practice down here tomorrow morning. The altitude has to be a concern for Kinnear and his players because Pachuca, a mining city located about 60 miles Northeast of Mexico City, is sitting at about 8,000 feet above sea level. Kinnear has his full complement of players 18, on the trip, but only three substitutes may be used in the match with Pachuca Thursday night.
Kinnear says five years ago when his team last appeared here under the name, San Jose Earthquakes, the altitude wasn't a major problem, but he seemed to be rolling his eyes a bit when he told me that. He and his players will have more of an idea of what affect this high altitude will have on their bodies after Wednesday's practice. It is cool and rainy here as I write this story Tuesday evening. It is expected to stay that way through the rest of the week. We drove by the stadium in this city of about 1 million residents earlier today and it looks like a top notch facility, which includes corporate suites. It seats about 30,000 and it will be packed Thursday night. Driving up here from Mexico City was interesting. Getting out of the city of 20 million is always challenging, but I'm always amazed at the amount of people located in that city. We had a driver pick us up at the airport and he drove us up here to Pachuca. As Ernesto commented as we were driving through the city streets, which were lined by thousands of concrete dwellings, "This city runs pretty efficiently for having so many people living here." As we drove away from Mexico City, we eventually got into the countryside, which for much of the way contained only shrubs and cactus. Plus, a lot of dwellings for the people that live here. As you might expect there were many roadside stands selling all kinds of things. But what amazed me is we would come to a grove of trees and there would be a cab stand. Places that looked like the "middle of nowhere" would have a clump of trees and five taxicabs parked underneath waiting for customers. As we approached Pachuca, the land looked more fertile and I could see farmers working the fields. The soil is rich and black at this high elevation and there are thousands of acres being farmed outside of Pachuca. Pachuca itself is an old mining town. Silver was the main ore mined here originally by the Germans and the English. But they also mined gold here and legend has it that the stadium where Thursday night's game is going to be played is one of the most valuable in all of Mexico because it is built on top of ground that still contains silver and gold deposits. There you go an update on the Dynamo and a little geography lesson to go with it. Don't forget to check our video blog with Dynamo coach Dominic Kinnear.
