Real men aren't afraid to dance

Butch Alsandor

Last night before the Rockets bumped off the Clippers at
Toyota Center I had dinner with Clyde Drexler.
Actually , he was eating and I was intruding on his space .
Always the gentleman, "The Glide" said ,"How are you doing Lew?"
He calls me Lew Alcindor instead of Butch Alsandor, close enough.

We talked about "March Madness."

You see, Drexler has been to the "Big Dance" and now he's going back.
Only this time he'll be "Dancing With the Stars."

You've probably heard that Clyde will be gliding on the latest
edition of the popular reality show . But how did it come to be?
When the producers of the show first contacted Drexler his response
was something close to "Oh, Puh-leez." Drexler actually took a dancing
class during his days at the University of Houston, but it didn't stick.

However, his wife loves ballroom dancing . His two daughters also
thought it was a great idea. You see, they love to dance also.
So Clyde said ,"Why not?"

Of course, his son was the voice of reason . He said, "Dad what are you doing that for, don't embarrass us."

No worries. Clyde has been practicing his moves two hours a day, six days a week. The Hall of Famer is already in great physical shape. Part of his daily routine includes running 4 to 5 miles a day.

He'll be competiting against the likes of Leeza Gibbons,
Billy Ray Cyrus (Hannah Montana's dad), and Laila Ali just to name
a few . Outside of his family, his biggest supporter has been
Mr. "Dancing With the Stars" Emmitt Smith.

The Former Cowboys star is now known more for his "foxtrot" than
his footwork on the gridiron. He told Clyde to have fun and go with the flow .
Drexler told me straight up, "I'm no Sammy Davis Jr.and never will be,
but I bet Sammy didn't make many jumpers."
"The bottom line is trying ballroom dancing is a new setting for me,
and I've never been afraid to try something new."

Clyde insist the most difficult thing about learning the new steps
is maintaining his posture .He will be the tallest contestant so far
on the show at 6'7. His dancing partner Elena Grinenko of New Jersey is 5'4.

Before I wrapped up our chat, I remembered that I was in Springfield
with Clyde when he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
He told me then he loved a challenge, so is that why Clyde is gliding on
to a new stage . According to him its more simple than that ,
"Most guys are afraid to dance. I'd just like to show them that its OK."
