Matt Albers is one of the young guns who has a shot at winning a spot on the Astros roster if he can make an impression in spring training.

The 24year-old right-hander pitched at Clements High School in Sugar Land and played ball at San Jacinto Junior College before making his big league debut in 2006.

He's blogging from spring training for KHOU.com and here's his first entry:

Saturday, March 24

Just got done with workouts today. First day I actually could wear shorts.

It's going pretty good. Today I threw a live batting practice session which, if you don't know exactly what that is, hitters get in there, the hitters will face live pitching, pitcher will get on the mound for about 10 minutes. You get up there, you tell the hitters what's coming, pretty much just never throw an inside pitch, just trying to throw the ball much throw down and away pretty much for the most part, mostly fastballs. Each hitter will face about five pitches and move on from there.

Everything's going pretty well here. Felt pretty good today in my live batting practice. Better than the first one that I threw a couple of days ago so I was pleased with that.

Games start Thursday, we have an intersquad game Tuesday which I should be throwing an inning in.

So until then... just trying to hang out, may catch a little sun, play a little golf.
