Spring Training blog: Rookie pitcher sees first game action

4:04 PM Tue, Feb 27, 2007 |
Michelle Homer

Astros rookie Matt Albers, a Clements High School product, is blogging from spring training for KHOU.com. Albers, 24, is trying to win a spot on the Astros starting rotation. Here's is latest blog entry:

Tuesday, Feb. 27
Today I went to the field, we actually had an intersquad game, first game action that we've had -- 5 1/2 innings so I think 11 guys ended up throwing.

Aaron Glenn return to Texans?

3:57 PM Tue, Feb 27, 2007 |

I ran into Aaron Glenn today and was talking about his future. You'll recall he was with the Texans for the first three years of the franchise but then left to play in Dallas with Bill Parcells and the Cowboys. I told him he was going to love playing for new head coach Wade Phillips and I was surprised when he said his options were open right now and Houston could be his final stop. Teams and players can't talk to each other before March 2nd about free agents, (and he's not one) but something possibly could be worked out after the Texans explore all of their options.

He didn't really want to go north in...

Matt Albers is one of the young guns who has a shot at winning a spot on the Astros roster if he can make an impression in spring training.

The 24year-old right-hander pitched at Clements High School in Sugar Land and played ball at San Jacinto Junior College before making his big league debut in 2006.

He's blogging from spring training for KHOU.com and here's his first entry:

Thoughts from Astros Training Camp in Kissimmee

4:51 PM Fri, Feb 23, 2007 |

It was a sunny day in Central Florida as the Astros went through their second day of full squad workouts.
One of the most impressive performances of the day was turned in by right-handed pitcher Jason Jennings during live batting practice. It's not surprising that the pitchers are ahead of the hitters at this point in camp, but the recently acquired Jennings had all the hitters including slugger Carlos Lee reacting to his pitches with several ooooo's ...and ahhhhh's.

Speaking of Lee, about the only rap on him is his hit/strikeout ratio There's a feeling by many that he's susceptible to the curve bal...

Rockets staying pat .

Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson is no teenager but
he was glued to his phone as the N.B.A. trade deadline came and went.

C.D. decided a major deal just wasn't in the cards for the Rockets .
But it was not because of a lack of effort .

When I spoke to Dawson this afternoon he said, "Most of the teams
out there were more interested in helping themselves instead
of helping the Rockets."

Don't stop now T-MAC

5:25 PM Tue, Feb 20, 2007 |

Tracy McGrady is free stroking it right now. He is putting the Houston Rockets on his back and basically saying fellas enjoy the ride. It is absolutely remarkable what he can do with a basketball and he is really showing how valuable he can be. The Rockets have won 17 of the 25 games they have played since losing Yao Ming with a broken knee and now the tall one is expected back in just a few weeks so what will happen when he returns?

One opinion is T-Mac becoming more of a role player by not scoring 30 points a game but passing the ball around to everyone. That's how he played prior to Yao's injury as ...

Astros Camp Opens

1:49 PM Fri, Feb 16, 2007 |

28 pitchers and 6 catchers reported to the Astros training facilities in Kissimmee, Florida.
The long grind of the 2007 baseball campaign is under way.
It is arguably the most difficult schedule in sport mentally as the season calls for a full 162 games from Aprill to early October. Add in the Grapefruit schedule in March and if the Astros make the postseaon, we're talking perhaps a total of 200 games or more during a nine month span.
While baseball is a team game, the Pitcher vs. Batter confrontation is the ultimate one on one matchup. It is always the game within a game which baseball fans can s...

Drive the "Carr" or call the "Plummer".

6:40 PM Thu, Feb 15, 2007 |
Butch Alsandor

Since Gary Kubiak took over as head coach , the Texans
have been called "Denver south". The influx of former Broncos
hasn't been a bad thing , but do they really need a "Plummer".

The plummer works well on Desperate Housewives , but could
Jake Plummer make it work in Houston.
Its not like, choosing who you want on the cover of the new Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue, Beyonce or Gisele Bundchen. There's no wrong answer there .
But when your talking about David Carr or Jake Plummer there might not
be a right answer.

Spring Training

1:09 PM Wed, Feb 14, 2007 |

There are six more weeks of winter, but for baseball fans spring has already sprung. Baseball training camps are opening this week as pitchers and catchers stretch out their arms in advance of the position players who report next week.
But the question remains, which teams are better and which teams are not. On paper it appears the Cubs who went on a spending spree, appear to be a better ballclub. But Cub fans know, markee players don't necessarily mean a World Series. Meanwhile in Saint Louis, so long as Albert Pujols is on the roster, the Cardinals are the favorites to win the National League. No batter...

Is Tiger picking his spots to keep streak alive?

6:31 PM Wed, Feb 07, 2007 |
Butch Alsandor

The biggest "American Idol" might be Tiger Woods, and he
can't really carry a tune . But a lot of his critics are singing loudly
about Mr. Woods pulling out of the Nissan Open next week.

They say Tiger is ducking a course he always has trouble with,
just to keep his pursuit of Byron Nelson's 11 straight tour wins alive .

I say so what . Even if he is ducking the tournament, and I don't
believe he is . In the sport of golf you can run , but there is really no place to hide.

Colts do it!!! I told you so!!!

9:45 PM Sun, Feb 04, 2007 |

For those of you reading my blog, I predicted the Colts would win the Super Bowl and they did it pretty much exactly how I said they would do it. With the weather in south Florida absolutely brutal, Peyton Manning understood the elements and knew his opponant. He is as good as anyone in the game today preparing and making adjustments. That's what he did to become the game's MVP. He controlled the ball and did just enough to secure the Indianapolis Colts first ever NFL Championship. The game wasn't exciting, in fact it was dull as dishwater but it was effective as the Colts shutdown the Bears running game when ...

HOUSTON AREA HALL OF FAMERS

3:34 PM Sun, Feb 04, 2007 |

When former OIlers/Titans offensive lineman Bruce Matthews was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame over the weekend, he took it all in stride. That's just the way Bruce is. No fanfare, No chest-beating or talking smack ....... Bruce played football the way he's lived his 45 years on this earth ..... in a first class manner.

Super Bowl Winner? I've got it!!!!

4:29 PM Fri, Feb 02, 2007 |

I know you've all been waiting for this especially after the success I had picking the two teams that were going to play in the Super Bowl. I knew it would be the Colts and Da Bears now let's look at the big game.
I just checked the weather forecast for Miami and that will have a huge determination on who is going to win. It's 50% chance of rain and if that holds true, it will be a advantage for Chicago. They are used to the outdoors and inclement weather. Of course they would love to have it between 10 and 30 degrees but that will not be the case as it could be rain and between 70 to 80 degrees. Da Bea...

85 Bears ...really "Invincible".

5:11 PM Thu, Feb 01, 2007 |
Butch Alsandor

If Al Gore can be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize,
Brian Urlacher can certainly be elected Mayor of Chicago.

One Bears fan is so pumped about her team taking on
the Colts in Super Bowl 41, she rented out ad space on her belly
for two tickets to the big game.

It turned out to be a pretty good deal for the advertiser also,
because the woman is 8 months pregnant.
That's really being passionate about your team.
