It doesn't get any better than Bruce Matthews. The big offensive lineman is on the ballot ready to get voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and if I had my way, he would be a unanimous pick. We were a bad football team back in the early 80's here in Houston. The Oilers were coming off the Luv Ya Blue era in the late 70's where play on the field and fan support was at an all time high. Bum was fired, the cupboard was left dry and it was start over time for the franchise. The Oiler braintrust knew winning the battle in the trenches was the key to success so in 1982 they selected Mike Munchak out of Penn State (Hall of Fame class of 2001) and then in 1983 they picked a talented player out of USC named Bruce Matthews. Munchie looked like an offensive lineman, built like a brickhouse, tough as nails. Matthews was as big but looked more like a skilled player and skilled he was. When he first showed up, he was walking DOWN THE HALL at the training facilities and I thought this guy can handle a football not just hit somebody and I was right. Bruce was unique in that he was a heck of a basketball player, could throw a football with accuracy and could catch passes with ease. Most lineman can't do that. Then we all had a chance to see how he played his position. You talk about amazing. Not only did he have toughness and strength to knock heads with the biggest and baddest defensive players in the NFL, he also was brighter than all of them. It was incredible to watch him come off the ball, make initial contact winning the first battle and then go take out someone else. It happened all the time which astounded all of us who really know the game. We knew he was something special. Matthews also showed his versatility by playing every position on the offensive line and if you can believe this, he was the back up punter. For nearly twenty years, no one played better football than Bruce at the highest level. It will be an honor to visit Canton, Ohio in the future, walk in the shrine and ask someone where the bust is of Bruce Matthews. They will point to a direction and say, it's just DOWN THE HALL... in the HALL OF FAME. |
