Hockey in Houston

From a fan's perspective, one of the most entertaining sporting events to view in person is an NHL Hockey game. It is fast paced and literally breathtaking, especially when a puck is deflected off a stick and shoots into the crowd. However once again Houston is being used as a bargaining chip, and that's not right. It was 9 years ago, the very proud Edmonton Oilers franchise was in financial trouble. The owner couldn't get the deal he wanted locally, and Rockets Owner Les Alexander was willing to purchase the team. However, Canada didn't want to lose another franchise, and enough pressure was put on to keep the Oilers in Edmonton. Now its the Pittsburgh Penguins turn to put the pressure on in Pennsylvania, by looking elsewhere. It's an all too familiar tactic. Remember we're still paying for the extra seats in the empty Astrodome which Bud Adams needed to keep the NFL Oilers from moving to Jacksonville. Well Bud didn't run to Florida, but instead he did do the Tennessee two- step, and it took 6 long years before the Texans filled the void. While I welcome having an NHL franchise come to Houston, I am concerned about the cost, and it's not just dollars and cents. Hockey fans in Pittsburgh have enjoyed watching the Penguins since 1967, and I can understand their disappointment should the team head south.
