Dr. King had a dream, so did Dungy and Smith.

On Monday we celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday.
This holiday is not about who gets to host the M.L.K. parade, but if you're
in Houston, sometimes it seems that way .

Believe it or not, its about celebrating the right and opportunity to succeed and
live the american dream, regardless of your skin color or your religion.

Right now, Lovie Smith of the Bears and Tony Dungy of the Colts represent
what Dr. King's dream was all about. They will be the first two black head
coaches in the Super Bowl.

In his famous "I Have A Dream" speech , King says his dream is deeply
rooted in the American dream, and what's more american than football?

There was a time not long ago when black football players couldn't
sleep in the same hotels with their white teammates.
They couldn't eat in the same restaurants . They couldn't even drink from
the same water fountain. But now, in 2007 there will be two black men
coaching in the ultimate game .

Dr.King had a dream ,"that one day this nation would rise up and live out
the true meaning of its creed" ---"We hold these truths to be self evident ,
that all men are created equal." Of course no minority was treated
as an equal in the 60's, but Dr. King had a vision of what the world could be .
We haven't reached that goal yet, but there has been progress.

Look around, for the first time a woman and a black man are the leading
candidates for the Democratic Nomination to run for President.

When asked about making history, Lovie Smith said he understood
the importance of it , but he hoped he would live to see a day when
it wouldn't be history. It reminded me of something Doug Williams once said
after winning the Super Bowl with the Redskins . It was something like,
"It's great to be the first black quarterback to win the Super Bowl,
but it will also be nice when people see me as just a good quarterback."

Dr. King said ," I have a dream that my four little children will one
day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but
by the content of their character."
That day is not here yet. Dungy and Smith also had a dream just like M.L.K.,
and they will get to live it out on Feburary 4th in Miami in front of millions of
people from all walks of life. Its the kind of progress Dr. King had in mind.
