The Florida Gators are dancing all over the desert while the Ohio State Buckeyes are heading back to winter in Columbus. Maybe now's a good time to change the name of their conference. Since Penn State joined up, there are 11 teams in the "Big 10" which may be large in enrollment, but no longer can claim to be a powerhouse. Remember Michigan fans said their team should play for the national championship claiming the Wolverines were the only team which could give their rivals a run. Hollow words after folding to USC in the Rose Bowl. And what about Boise State? Quick which team ran the table to go unbeaten this year. Ohio State, Florida, USC? Nope. The Broncos busted the BCS with a "Hook and ladder" and then a "Statue of Liberty." They said, "later" to the "Sooners" and had a huge "Fiesta." Now the Broncos have every right to say proudly, "We're number 1!" even if the BCS says they aren't. It seems every year the BCS gets tweaked, and every year there are more calls to break up the monopoly the large conferences have. At least in College Basketball, every team gets a shot at the title, yes every school. How many times has the 65 team field include a school with a sub .500 record. A team gets hot and wins its conference tournament to earn the automatic qualifier. Some may argue that isn't fair because another "worthy" school was left out. Well at least the "worthy" school had the opportunity to get in. With the BCS the Boise State's can go undefeated and still not win the BCS championship. You would think College Football would get the message, maybe the National Championship should be a tournment where a school with a loss or two competes on the field for the title, and not some silly vote. It's good for basketball, oh that's right, Florida is the current title holder too. |
