It was one of the classic sleepers of all time. The Texans were victorious over the Raiders inspite of themselves. Don't get me wrong, it's hard to win in the NFL and a win is a win, but what we saw in the bay area will never be forgotten, not because of incredible athletic manuverability, but because of the Texans strange offensive strategy. How can you possibly walk off the field feeling good as an offense when you only net a minus five yards passing and it was a nice day. It wasn't the same scenerio as the last time something like that happened and the team won. It was another Houston team and I was on the sidelines. We were in the Dome and the Oilers were hosting the Cincinnati Bengals. The Snake, Kenny Stabler was calling the signals and he was having problems with our head coach Eddie Biles. They were not seeing eye to eye about some issues so Snake was as adamant about sticking to a very conservative offensive game plan. He finished with a grand total of minus 4 yards passing in the 17-10 win. I remember thinking this wasn't what we practiced all week but apparantly Stabler was making a statement to the head coach. It was weird the way it all played out but as a team you go into a game trying to win and that's how it turned out. Kenny Stabler knew how to get the best of an opponant, as history certainly reveals, but in this case he accomplished that goal while also letting the head coach know he was RUNNING the team. |
