On Wednesday afternoon, I was over at the JW Marriott for another upbeat luncheon honoring young men who have not only excelled on the football field but also in the classroom. It was the National Football Fourndation and College Football Hall of Fame High School luncheon giving recognition where recognition is so deserving. Twenty five scholar athletes from across our city along with their coaches but most importantly their parents relishing in all the hard work that has taken place to get them to this promising point in their lives. These are young men who know what they want and know where they are going. They are good kids who believe in accomplishment, have religious convictions and are not afraid to hold a job. What a novel idea!!!! The selection process is done by the univeristy presidents in Houston. The top guns go through all the applicants papers then give their recommendations to the TD Club which lends tremendous credibility to the program. When everything was all said and done, Barton Dear from Klein Oak won the $1500.00 scholarship. Here's the quality of who was in that room, Dears accomplishments: He is a semifinalist for the Texas Christian Athlete of the Year and the George Bush/Kiwanis sports hero award. Barton is an all-district selection at linebacker but also plays lacrosse and ice hockey. Dear also serves as senior class vice president, president of the National Honor Society and French National Honor Society. In his spare time, he is vice president of Mu Alpha Theta, a mathematics honor society. He also lead the charge for Klein Oak's state championship math team. Need I say more!!! |
