It is welcome news to hear both the University of Houston and Rice University are going to bowl games this year. For the Owls, it's their first flight since 1961, but their opponent will be less than hoped for, and the reason is lame. Rice is headed to the New Orleans Bowl, which was played in Lafayette last season because of Hurricane Katrina. The game will surely help the city which is gradually coming back after the terrible storm. But facing either Troy, which used to be called Troy State, or Middle Tennessee State, lacks the luster of facing another opponent. C-USA is sending Tulsa to the Fort Worth Bowl, since it is closer than New Orleans. I'd rather hear a different excuse. The travel distance isn't all that much different. So now Rice fans get to paint New Orleans blue, and enjoy your bowl game! |
