I just got off the phone with Craig Biggio's agent Barry Axelrod. Barry is one of the really good agents representing players and has done a masterful job representing Biggio and slugger Jeff Bagwell. He is an agent who understands more than just the bottom line dollar. He really cares about the players and about different organizations. We have seen him operate during the long and exciting careers of two of the really talented killer bees. During that time he always understood what Biggio and Bagwell meant to the Astros organization. In the world of professional baseball, where players move from team to team faster than a fashion model changes clothes, he has been a calming and solidifying force in their decisions when they could have gone elsewhere for way more money. Biggio and Bagwell are the Houston Astros. They are the bronze statues in front of Minute Maid Park. They are the reason for years fans have packed the park. Bags is done playing and now Biggio is looking for that one last contract so he can get his 3000th hit in Houston. It will be a monumental moment when that happens. The two sides are close but the wish here is the Astros give it up a little during the negotiations to show appreciation for all the times Craig stayed in town instead of taking the money and running to the highest bidder. |
