November 2006 ArchivesIt is welcome news to hear both the University of Houston and Rice University are going to bowl games this year. For the Owls, it's their first flight since 1961, but their opponent will be less than hoped for, and the reason is lame. Rice is headed to the New Orleans Bowl, which was played in Lafayette last season because of Hurricane Katrina. The game will surely help the city which is gradually coming back after the terrible storm. But facing either Troy, which used to be called Troy State, or Middle Tennessee State, lacks the luster of facing another opponent. C-USA is sending Tulsa to the Fort Worth Bowl, ... I'm pretty sure Gary Kubiak thought, when he got the job with the Houston Texans, it wasn't going to be this hard. He knew he had to slowly turn an ugly ship around and I'll bet deep down inside, he thought he could do it faster than it's played out but sometimes when reality hits, it hits really hard. If James Bond can't beat a dancing penguin at the box office, So if "Happy Feet" can edge out "Casino Royale", Afterall, they did have Vince Young at quarterback leading A big story was made last week of Texans offensive linemen Fred Weary resisting arrest during a traffic stop and then being Tasered. The "resisting arrest" charges have been dropped and we may never know exactly what happen but we do know this... Fred Weary is a stand-up guy. By that I mean, he met with the media on Wednesday afternoon after he was cleared and told how he felt during the entire ordeal. Weary has the reputation of being a really good guy and you know what happened had to really hurt him inside. Wednesday afternoon we found out just how bad. As he sat in front of his locker at Reliant Stadium, t... It is fun to hear some of the comments made from so called college football "experts." I heard on the radio by several analysts, this week's Rutgers Louisville game is the "biggest in Rutgers history." How quickly "they" forget. I'm sure many folks from New Jersey, especially those who went to Princeton or to Rutgers would beg to differ. The following is from "A Princeton Campion." Astros general manager Tim Purpura understands when it comes So he's looking for just the right person to become the team's What he's looking for is someone who is part teacher, part mentor, On Wednesday afternoon, I was over at the JW Marriott for another upbeat luncheon honoring young men who have not only excelled on the football field but also in the classroom. It was the National Football Fourndation and College Football Hall of Fame High School luncheon giving recognition where recognition is so deserving. Twenty five scholar athletes from across our city along with their coaches but most importantly their parents relishing in all the hard work that has taken place to get them to this promising point in their lives. These are young men who know what they want and know where they are going. Th... I had a conversation with Astros general manager Tim Purpura Lidge is spending some time with his family away from baseball. I just got off the phone with Craig Biggio's agent Barry Axelrod. Barry is one of the really good agents representing players and has done a masterful job representing Biggio and slugger Jeff Bagwell. He is an agent who understands more than just the bottom line dollar. He really cares about the players and about different organizations. We have seen him operate during the long and exciting careers of two of the really talented killer bees. During that time he always understood what Biggio and Bagwell meant to the Astros organization. In the world of professional baseball, where players move from team to team... I've heard from many football fans today about how much they think the Texans are improving especially after having a great chance to knock off the Giants yesterday in New Jersey. It was a close game and without a late fumble, it could have happened but that line of thinking is driving me crazy. I am so frustrated with the local team for not winning as I feel like they have the talent to be victorious right now. I'm watching all the upsets the last few weeks in the NFL and wondering why the Texans can't do the same thing. I understand every week they are the underdogs and have earned that reputation but to thin... Paul McCartney says he holds no grudge against his estranged second Unlike singer Madonna who blamed the media for her botched adoption. Look, I want to see the Tour Championship played without Just look at the numbers ,Tiger is the tour. He's won 8 times If not for the Enron scandal which ensared Dynegy as well, Houston would be hosting the PGA Tour Championship this weekend. It is considered to be the "Super Bowl" of golf bringing together the top 30 money winners for one of the tour's biggest purses. Dynegy was once the proud sponsor, but as it fell into reorganization, Coca-Cola swooped in and took the event from Champions to Atlanta. But what Coca-Cola and the PGA didn't count on was to have its two biggest stars, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson bow out. The event is going on, but it is no longer compelling. Does it really matter whether or not Retief Goos... The Houston Dynamo should be considered the favorites heading into their Western Conference title game Sunday against the Colorado Rapids. The Dynamo finished 2 1 and 1 against them in the regular season...and playing this game on the Dynamo's home field, Robertson Stadium, is huge. ... |
