Mario Williams is a gentle, soft-spoken young man who has been thrust into the NFL spotlight. Not that he's knocking it ....'cause he loves the money .... but I don't think there is anyway he anticipated being under such a microscope.
At times this season after games Mario told me and the other assembled reporters that he had a rough day because he was being double and triple teamed all day long. When he made that comment ....I about fell over because quite a few times during that particular game .... Mario had been handled by one player. Not 2. Not 3 ...but one.
But that was a few games back and since then ... even though Mario hasn't been super .... he at least is contributing on a play to play basis.
In the meantime up in Nashville, Vince Young hasn't been super either ...but the former Madison High School star is figuring out the pro game ...and he's already figured out how to lead his team to victory even if he doesn't play his best. Make no mistake .... Vince is a winner. He will win in the NFL. He might not always do it by being the most stylish ....but he will do it. It's that type of leadership quality that made him such an attractive number-one pick for the Texans ....in my view at least. And it's that type of leadership that has been missing on the Texans since the team's inception.
Sunday's game should be totally entertaining. So many key players futures were affected when the Texans decided to stay with David Carr at quarterback during the off-season. That decision made picking Vince a non-option ..and when the Texans passed on Reggie Bush to get Mario .....that opened up the opportunity for Tennessee owner, Bud Adams, to pick Vince. The Titans coaching staff would have preferred Matt Leinart , I believe. But Bud ....unlike his River Oaks neighbor Bob McNair....knows a marketing tool when he sees it ...and he sees it in Vince Young.
I'm picking the Texans to win 24 to 21 ...but if Vince can get it going ..... I would not be at all surprised if somehow ... someway he leads the Titans to victory. No one knows for sure who will win ....but I do know that this game will attract more TV viewers in the Houston area than any other sports event this weekend.
