Mario and Yao toeing the line

I have never seen so much talk about a big toe toenails than this past year and all the conversation is centered around some of Houston's finest athletes. We're not referring to the ordinary Joe's, or Harry's or Pete's for Pete's sake, we talking about the players we pay to see. It's makes me cringe to think about removing toenails. Isn't that what they used to do to spies to get them to talk?
First it was Texans number one pick Mario Williams who was having trouble with his toes this spring so doctors removed both big toe toenails to take care of the problem permanantly. I've heard they don't grow back but then again, I've heard they do. Mario seems to be getting around okay.

Then the Rockets announced that superstar center Yao Ming is on the shelf for about 10 days after having the toe nail removed from his left big toe. OUCH... I'll talk!!!
In all my years playing athletics or covering sports, I've never heard of taking the toenail... trimming yes but removed... NO.
So I'm doing the news last night talking with my colleague Lisa Foronda who loves to run. She told me it happens all the time for runners. Maybe that's why I don't enter any marathons.
Rockets head coach Jeff Van Gundy along with all-star Tracy McGrady sounded irritated with Yao's condition questioning why he can't get shoes to protect his toes. In this world, where billions are spent on making footwear lighter and softer, why can't they get someone or something to help him. The Rockets want to start fast and don't want to begin the season with the big guy on the shelf. Yao says he will be up and at least jogging by later this week. It seems to me, someone's got to stand up and toe the line on this problem. It's happening way to much. .
