Houston is there a problem at quarterback?

11:30 PM Sun, Oct 29, 2006 |
Butch Alsandor

Texans quarterback David Carr spent most of the second
half vs the Titans watching the action.

He had a stunned look in his eyes. We've seen it before,
usually when he's getting sacked .
But on Sunday, it was coach Gary Kubiak doing the sacking,
benching Carr in favor of backup Sage Rosenfels.

Maybe Bonzi doesn't need a lot of practice.

3:35 PM Thu, Oct 26, 2006 |
Butch Alsandor

Bonzi Wells could finally make his debute tonight when
the Rockets play their final preseason game .

It won't mean much in terms of what he's going to get out of the playing time.
Bonzi is a veteran. He won't learn anything new by playing in a meaningless
preseason game.

But Rocket fans really need to see him out there.
They need to see him in Rocket's red , wearing the uniform,
reaffirming the fact that he will play a key role on this team.

Is Vince more motivated than Mario ?

2:40 PM Thu, Oct 26, 2006 |
Butch Alsandor

Anyone who has even a passing relationship with
Vince Young understands he's all about Texas.
He gave up the bikinis on South Beach , turning down Miami
to play for the Longhorns .

Anything Houston is on his "A list" , Rockets , Astros, and Beyonce.
Of course Beyonce makes the list strictly on musical talent alone,
afterall V.Y. is engaged.
So anyone who believes he won't try to stick it to his hometown team
is being a little naive .

Will Mario be Super Sunday Facing Vince??

1:14 PM Thu, Oct 26, 2006 |

Mario Williams is a gentle, soft-spoken young man who has been thrust into the NFL spotlight. Not that he's knocking it ....'cause he loves the money .... but I don't think there is anyway he anticipated being under such a microscope.

Victory Weekend

1:08 PM Mon, Oct 23, 2006 |

You have to be hard pressed to remember a weekend when some many teams did so well. Both Texas and Texas A&M had thrilling victories, while Rice and the University of Houston also marched on. And how about the Texans, maybe they should wear red every week? It looks like it makes for easier targets for quarterback David Carr. How many times have the Texans said this season, if we run the ball well, we'll be fine. Guess what rookie Wali Lundy ran the ball well, and they did fine. (And they say football is a complicated game.) The only downer of the weekend, Texas Southern losing a heart breaker to Mississippi Valley ...

Welcome to Wali's World .

Butch Alsandor

There were many stars in the Texans 27-to-7 victory over
the Jaguars. You can make a case for David Carr, certainly
Andre Johnson's name comes to mind. What about the offensive line ?
Hey , the entire defensive unit played great.

But my vote goes to runnng backs Wali Lundy and
Samkon Gado, for giving the Texans their first
real running attack of the season.

Inappropriate Comments

1:10 PM Mon, Oct 16, 2006 |

It's never good when booth announcers are the news. They are to report and comment on the games, not become part of the event. But as we start the new week, two announces are without jobs because they said things this weekend before engaging their brains first.
Perhaps the biggest faux pas occurred during the brawl between Miami and Florida International. Get a load of this transcript from former University of Miami and Tampa Bay Bucs reciever Lamar Thomas working in the booth for Comcast Sports:
"Now, that's what I'm talking about. You come into our house, you should get your behind kicked....

Are the Texans on a sinking ship ?

1:54 AM Mon, Oct 16, 2006 |
Butch Alsandor

If the Texans were a ship sailing the high seas they would be
tapping out an SOS right about now, hoping some brave soul
would toss them a life preserver.

They are not drowning yet, but it seemed like it after
dropping a 34-to-6 decision to the Cowboys at Texas Stadium.

Truth be told, I didn't expect them to win the game, but I did think
they would score at least one touchdown.

The hotseat is cooling off for coach Fran.

1:19 AM Mon, Oct 16, 2006 |
Butch Alsandor

If Texas A&M coach Dennis Franchione was writing a letter
to Aggie fans , he would borrow from Mark Twain and say
something like ,"the reports of my demise were greatly exaggerated."

For the first time in 6 tries , the Aggies knocked off a ranked
opponent at home under coach Fran's regime.
Which should take him off the hotseat with fans at least for a while .

Reporter remembers another Yankee's deadly crash

11:30 AM Thu, Oct 12, 2006 |
Michelle Homer

The plane crash that Yankee pitcher Cory Lidle Wednesday stirred up memories for 11 News reporter Dan Lauck. He was a young sportswriter in New York back in the '70s when Yankee catcher Thurman Munson crashed his small plane and died. Lauck was the first reporter on the scene.

Opportunity is knocking for Texans.

11:18 PM Wed, Oct 11, 2006 |
Butch Alsandor

As the Texans prepare to meet the Cowboys they must ask themselves,
is this a good time to face the boys from "Big D".

One look at the Dallas, Philadelphia game tape and the Texans
have a lot to be encouraged about.

I mean, no one does a better Statue of Liberty impersonation
than Drew Bledsoe. Old "wooden legs" was sacked so much
by the Eagles he should have been carring groceries .

ADMINISTAFF CHAMPIONS TOURNAMENT

4:33 PM Wed, Oct 11, 2006 |

If you're a golf fan ..... than I suggest taking in this week's Administaff Small Business Classic at Augusta Pines Golf Club in Spring. The Champions Tour is making it's 3rd annual stop at this northern course and when I attended Wednesday's Pro-Am everything looked in great shape for this event.

Mario and Yao toeing the line

4:22 PM Tue, Oct 10, 2006 |

I have never seen so much talk about a big toe toenails than this past year and all the conversation is centered around some of Houston's finest athletes. We're not referring to the ordinary Joe's, or Harry's or Pete's for Pete's sake, we talking about the players we pay to see. It's makes me cringe to think about removing toenails. Isn't that what they used to do to spies to get them to talk?
First it was Texans number one pick Mario Williams who was having trouble with his toes this spring so doctors removed both big toe toenails to take care of the problem permanantly. I've heard they don't grow back...

Bring on the Cowboys

12:48 PM Mon, Oct 09, 2006 |

With the playoffs out of reach for the Texans this week's game against the Cowboys is the biggest of the season. It's been 5 seasons since the opening 19-10 shocker in front of a national television audience, and would it be nice to think the Texans have improved each succeeding season. They have not. Certainly the Cowboys are beatable, but so are the Texans. The defense just didn't get well in one week even if they did handle the Miami Dolphins. The Cowboys are coming off a tough loss in Philadelphia, and they will be hungry to get back winning. The Texans enjoyed a bye week, but no the challenge is to make ...

Three of a Kind (Vince, Reggie, and Matt).

1:43 AM Mon, Oct 09, 2006 |
Butch Alsandor

So the Texans didn't draft Reggie , Vince, or Matt Leinart,
we won't know if that was the right move for some time.

What I do know is , watching the 3 rookies on Sunday was
like the anticipation associated with a good book, a good meal,
maybe even a good kiss. Notice I said maybe a good kiss.

Quarterback has more than "Luck" on his side.

5:03 PM Thu, Oct 05, 2006 |
Butch Alsandor

In the case of Stratford quarterback Andrew Luck, its to easy
to attritbute all of his sucess to a case of like father, like son.

Sure his pop is former N.F.L. Oilers quarterback Oliver Luck,
but Andrew wasn't born until after Oillie finished his 5 years with the Oilers.

I talked with both father and son this week and the visit
was just as much a lesson in parenting , as it was football related.

WHERE'S THE BEEF?

10:50 AM Thu, Oct 05, 2006 |

When I attended last week's Texas A&M/Texas Tech football game a few things stood out to me. Sure the 85,000 plus fans stayed until the very end ..and the burgers were great as usual afterwards at the Dixie Chicken ....but where's the beef on the Aggies football team??

Who's next for the Rangers?

12:51 PM Wed, Oct 04, 2006 |

It doesn't come as much of a surprise that the Rangers fired manager Buck Showalter, but what is surprising is that he had 3 years left on his contract. I remember thinking four years ago it was a bad hire and would end badly for the Rangers and Showalter. It's not that guys don't need second chances, Joe Torre, Tony La Russa and Jim Leyland have all been shown the door elsewhere, and the trio are managing teams in the playoffs. But Showalter's hire was more curious. OK, he didn't get along with the Boss in New York, and he had an expansion club in Arizona, but was there any evidence he would be successful in A...

T-MAC ATTACK

4:38 PM Tue, Oct 03, 2006 |

The Rockets are officially underway with flash bulbs bursting and interviews being conducted as media day kicked things off at the Toyota Center. I spoke with Tracy McGrady, who had a content look on his face while even going through all the hoopla, and asked him why he looked so relaxed. (By the way, T-Mac always looks relaxed but today was different) He basically told me for the first time in his career he is surrounded by players who he thinks can win a championship.
With the addition of Shane Battier and Bonzi Wells, the Rockets are more versatile. They don't have to rely totally on Yao Ming and McG...

Super Mario

4:17 PM Mon, Oct 02, 2006 |

The Texans got a win and now everyone is happy. Have you noticed? Life is so much better when you walk off the field on top instead of getting plowed and it couldn't come at a better time for Gary Kubiak, David Carr and Mario Williams. The Texans now have two weeks to relish on this one and that is a good thing with the bye week coming up. Although the Texans have a long way to go to be a consistant winner, we are starting to see the effects of the decision they made on draft day to select Mario Williams. It's a long term decision.

Haynesworth's heinous incident

12:19 PM Mon, Oct 02, 2006 |

Tennessee defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth says he deserves to be punished after being ejected in the Titans' loss to Dallas. Haynesworth was tossed yesterday after stomping on the head of Cowboys center Andre Gurode, and nearly blinding the lineman who played his high school ball at North Shore in the Galena Park school district. But the question comes next, what should be his punishment? While this happened on a football field, the action was criminal in nature. We have seen hockey players in courtrooms before, and Haynesworth should be subjected to the same. A suspension is not enough. The league must sen...
