We're not about to crown the Astros National League Central Division Champions just yet, but their sweep of the Cardinals over the weekend brings back memories of the worst collapse in Major League History. The year was 1964, the city of was Philadelphia. The Phillies had a powerful team. Richie Allen was the Rookie of the year, and they had a right fielder named Johnny Callison who put up MVP numbers. With 12 games to play the Phillies led the National League, remember there weren't any divisions back then, by 6 1/2 games. The Phillies fell apart losing 10 straight and finishing 1 game behind the St. Louis Cardinals. Last Thursday the Cardinals came to town with a 7 game lead over the Reds, and a 7 1/2 game lead over the Astros with 12 games to play. The Cardinals left town with only a 3 1/2 game lead over the Astros. It's still a long shot for the Astros to make the playoffs, but it has been done before. |
