AUSTIN -- As I attended Wednesday's workout at the Longhorns outdoor practice field ..... I was struck by a number of different images.
Number 1 ..... The Longhorns looked loose and relaxed. They had the same attitude as they approached January's national championship game at the Rose Bowl. If you're a Texas fan I think that's very good news. Music blared over the loudspeakers the entire time the Longhorns were stretching and loosening up. Redshirt freshman Colt McCoy and junior receiver Limas Sweed (out of Brenham H.S.) may have been the loosest of all.
Number 2 .... The suspension of senior cornerback Tarell Brown may be a factor in the game Saturday night versus Ohio State but as a team the Longhorns are moving forward. Co-defensive coordinator Duane Akina told me he knows it won't be the same without Brown in the starting lineup ....but as he pointed out ... The Longhorns had players go down in the national championship game ....but they just kept on playing. Junior cornerback Brandon Foster and sophomore Ryan Palmer will be asked to fill the void left by Brown's suspension. Senior cornerback Aaron Ross told me he has faith in the other guys plus the coaching staff to scheme against Ohio State in the proper manner so although he's concerned about trying to stop the high-powered Buckeyes offense led by quarterback Troy Smith and reciver Teddy Ginn ...he's not overly so because of Brown's absence.
Number 3 ..... Texas is one of those schools that NFL scouts love to come to. I talked to a scout from the Denver Broncos .....and saw two others from the Rams and the Falcons. The Longhorns have a bunch of former players in the NFL currently and it's no secret why they're there. The Texas coaching staff is capable of landing the best recruits in the country annually and here on campus the Longhorn coaches run practice similar to what you would see with an NFL team.
Number 4 ..... Head coach Mack Brown is hurting from his off-season knee replacement surgery. Mack is just as gung-ho and positive as ever ....but he's obviously been slowed by the surgery. Mack watched practice and moved around the field driving a golf cart. When he wasn't applauding his players efforts and shouting out encouragement ...I could see him massaging his surgically repaired knee.
Number 5 .... Jersey Village H.S. product Selvin Young tells me that despite all the success the Longhorns have experienced lately ....he claims they are still hungry team ....and they'll be ready to eat again on Saturday. Young tells me he has complete faith in Colt McCoy. He feels like Colt just needs to do his job .... And not try to make all the plays and the Longhorns offense will operate at a high level.
Number 6 ...this place is going to be crazy Saturday. Already two chartered jets full of Buckeye fans have arrived in Austin ...and thousands more are on the way. A big "Buckeye bash" will be hosted at Irwin Center Saturday before the game for all Buckeye fans. One fan told me 4,000 tickets were purchased through the university but thousands more fans are coming to Austin in hopes of landing tickets once they get here. Some believe there will be as many as 40,000 Buckeye fans in Austin by gametime. That number sounds high to me but then again it's not that often when you get to see number-one versus number-two in during college football's regular season. Reporting for KHOU.com ..... I'm Matt Musil.
