Before everyone gets bent out of shape with the way the Texans are playing just remember their season starts this week. There was no way they were going to win against a healthy Philadelphia team in the opener and there was certainly no way they were going to Indy and even come close to the Colts. They knew it, you knew it and so did everyone else in the world know it. Let me help all you fans understand the realities on life in the NFL. It is a hard league and especially difficult when implementing new systems. Don't let the pre-season give you any false hope Texans fans. Even though they moved the ball and scored some points, even stopping a few teams, this team is not ready for the upper echelon teams in football. The fact is, the go-to players around the league don't really care about the pre-season other than not getting hurt for the long regular season. So although they were putting in what Gary Kubiak and his staff were trying to run, the level of intensity goes up big time when the games really count. That is when all the key players turn it up a notch. The game plans are different... it's just a different setting. As I've been watching practice, I've been impressed with the businesslike approach of the Texans coaching staff. They work the players hard and prepare them the best they can but still there are so many young players that have no idea what's going on and the ones that have been around a bit still can't fully digest what took place in Indianapolis. Just the noise situation can be overwhelming. When you can't hear a thing like what the offense faced Sunday, you'd better have the system down pat or you're going to be exposed big time and that is what happened. I really don't think this offense will kick in until maybe the fifth or sixth week of the season. You just can't see everything you need to see at the speed you need to see it in just two regular season games. Defensively, it's ugly. I'm not sure if anything can be done there. They drafted some talented young players but all this is new to them and I don't see a glimmer of hope in sight like I do with the offense. I felt so hopeless watching Peyton Manning carve them up. So this week is a huge game if two 0-2 teams facing each other can be consider a huge game. But it's big for the Texans. It's amazing what a win over Washington would do to instill a little confidence. The players need to buy into what they are being coached. They need to believe that this system works. It all starts NOW!!!!! |
