Astros pitcher Brandon Backe had successful surgery on his right elbow today. The procedure is called Tommy John surgery which basically is a reconstruction of the tendons in his throwing arm.
The recovery time is extensive as it is expected to take between twelve to eighteen months. So really the Astros are not expecting him back before the 2008 season.
Several pitchers have had the surgery and have comeback to have successful careers including the Braves John Smoltz, Cy Young winner Pat Hentgen and the Phillies Randy Wolf who pitched against the Astros Wednesday night.
