Bedtime for Bonzi with Rockets

4:40 PM Fri, Sep 29, 2006 |
Butch Alsandor

You have to like the way the pieces are
falling into place for Jeff Van Gundy and
the Rockets.

Officially ,the Rockets have no comment .
But it appears free agent guard Bonzi Wells is preparing
for a wedding in his family ,
and a soon to be consummated marriage to the Rockets.

Astros and Cardinals making history.

2:51 PM Fri, Sep 29, 2006 |
Butch Alsandor

Just like you, I've watched the Astros go down
this road to the post season before.
Its like the last call for alcohol at a bar, only the Astros
are rushing to the playoffs, not to get a drink .
Well, maybe to the post season and a drink, who can
really say.

You just have to shake your head. I mean really ,
9 straight wins is amazing .
Their last defeat was way back on September 19.

oh NO T.O.

5:22 PM Wed, Sep 27, 2006 |

What else is going to happen with Terrell Owens. I don't buy for a minute he was trying to commit suicide. No not the guy who loves himself more than his team, who loves to be the story more than the game. T.O. is all about T.O. It may have been a total misunderstanding mixing his medication with his supplements but he can't even do that without parading himself in front of the public and showing everyone how important he is while his Cowboy teammates try to get ready to win a game. So today all the players in Cowboys camp got to answer questions about their self centered wide receiver. Nothing about them or ...

For Vince Young if not now, when.

10:02 PM Tue, Sep 26, 2006 |
Butch Alsandor

Let me start with a question, if a football team's offense
is like a car, is it time for the Titans to give Vince Young
the keys ?
I say why not , and the sooner the better.

In my mind, it comes down to two things . First, is starting
Vince a decision that will hurt the team?
No, the Titans are 0-3 and going nowhere fast.

For Texans...you can't be stupid and win

5:07 PM Mon, Sep 25, 2006 |

I have been saying all along... the Texans season really starts the third week of the regular season. Yes fans it started and it started on a sour note. I was just looking at the little things during the game with the Redskins and the local pro football team made some of the most insane mistakes during their loss. It used to drive me crazy when players would put themselves above the team. An example was the play of defensive lineman Thomas Johnson. He has to be hating life today after what he did in the game. Two personal foul penalties cost the Texans big time.

September Swoon

12:57 PM Mon, Sep 25, 2006 |

We're not about to crown the Astros National League Central Division Champions just yet, but their sweep of the Cardinals over the weekend brings back memories of the worst collapse in Major League History. The year was 1964, the city of was Philadelphia. The Phillies had a powerful team. Richie Allen was the Rookie of the year, and they had a right fielder named Johnny Callison who put up MVP numbers. With 12 games to play the Phillies led the National League, remember there weren't any divisions back then, by 6 1/2 games. The Phillies fell apart losing 10 straight and finishing 1 game behind the St. Louis Ca...

Texans can't slow down Redskins.

10:00 PM Sun, Sep 24, 2006 |
Butch Alsandor

Redskins quarterback Mark Brunell didn't have a Hallmark moment,
he had a Hallmark game .
Mark cared enough to send his very best effort
in a 31- to 15 rout of the Texans.

Now I realize this is a new year , with a new coaching staff , and new
players , but it looks an awful lot like last year.

Can Astros pull off another miracle run ?

11:56 PM Sat, Sep 23, 2006 |
Butch Alsandor

It was the most relaxed clubhouse I've ever been in.
Craig Biggio was telling me how he's been a life long Redskins fan,
Jason Hirsh was checking out ESPN, and Aubrey Huff was
catching up on his reading.

This team has nothing to lose , so they are letting it all
hang out and its working.
The proof is in Luke Scott's 3-run walk off homer on
Saturday night, giving the Astros a 7-to-4 victory
over the Cardinals , their third consective win over the Red Birds.

another ROCKET blastoff

3:40 PM Fri, Sep 22, 2006 |

It's never boring when you hang around Roger Clemens. It seems like everything he does is just a little different but it's interesting. Recent case in point...we all thought we may have seen him pitch in person for the last time in Houston against the Reds on Wednesday afternoon, now we find out he is going to start Sunday nights game against the Cardinals at Minute Maid Park on three days rest. How cool is that!!!! Roger is the consumate pro and this is another indication he'll do what is asked to help the team and help the organization. Now before all of you go crazy on me and some of you have about the mon...

Sometimes being a little bad is good .

1:37 AM Thu, Sep 21, 2006 |
Butch Alsandor

According to defensive end Jason Babin, coach Karmelowicz
is always talking about "grill work" how this defense needs
facemask to facemask contact.

Coach Karmelowicz can be an "old school" kinda guy,
but I agree with him. A little attitude on this defense
could go a long way .

Are three backs better than one?

12:39 AM Thu, Sep 21, 2006 |
Butch Alsandor

With the Bush administration underway in New Orleans, and
Domanick Davis training his pit bulls while recovering
from knee surgery, the Texans best bet might be
a running back by committee.

At least until someone can separate themselves from the pack.
Will it be rookie Wali Lundy, veteran Ron Dayne, or the newest
Texan Samkon Gado.

The ROCKET in another orbit

5:48 PM Wed, Sep 20, 2006 |

What a setting at Minute Maid Park Wednesday afternoon. For the 32,000 Astros fans, it will stay with them forever. If you were watching it on TV, you'll never forget it. If you were listening to Milo Hamilton on the radio, you felt his emotion describing what was happening on the mound. The Rocket, Roger Clemens was pitching in what was possibly the last start ever in front of the home folks. We don't know what the future will be for him but we all know he can still tossed it at the highest level of anyone currently in baseball. Back to the situation. It was the top of the seventh inning as Roger strolled b...

Clemens' Future?

smashing "d-fence"

3:14 PM Tue, Sep 19, 2006 |

Who says a low scoring game can't be exciting. In a world where points are so tied with memorable moments, smash mouth football is over the top fun to watch. The defending champion Pittsburgh Steelers were on the road Monday night visiting the Jacksonville Jaguars where the Jags won 9-nothing. There were some tenacious hits!!!! What I saw last night brought back memories of a game I was involved in back in 1980 as the Houston Oilers hosted the Steelers in the Astrodome. I don't remember much about it other than it was a bloodbath, an old time knock down drag out battle. But I will never forget one play which ...

Unbelievable Comebacks

12:58 PM Tue, Sep 19, 2006 |

Baseball fans are doing a lot of head scratching today after the Dodgers pulled off one the more incredible comebacks during a pennant chase. Trailing 9-5 to the Padres in the bottom of the 9th, the Dodgers cracked 4 homeruns to tie the game sending it to extra innings. In the 10th the Padres took the lead only to watch Nomar Garciaparra rip a 2 run homer in the bottom of the inning for the victory. It's only the 4th time in major league history 4 players have hit consecutive homeruns; the last time way back in 1964 when the Twins beat the Kansas City Athletics in 11 innings. Now the question comes what next? T...

From a quarterbacks perspective

4:10 PM Mon, Sep 18, 2006 |

Before everyone gets bent out of shape with the way the Texans are playing just remember their season starts this week. There was no way they were going to win against a healthy Philadelphia team in the opener and there was certainly no way they were going to Indy and even come close to the Colts.

They knew it, you knew it and so did everyone else in the world know it.

Check the striped shirts when playing out of conference.

3:07 PM Mon, Sep 18, 2006 |

There is a lot of hooting and hollering coming out of Norman, Oklahoma today after the Sooners were robbed of a victory in Oregon over the weekend. As shown repeatedly over the weekend, dispite having replay at their disposal, the referees blew the call on an on-sides kick late in the game. The Quack attack pounced and the Sooners headed back to Oklahoma feeling like they were had. Since this was a battle between two non-conference teams, who should have called the game? The announcers said it was a PAC-10 crew, which would figure since Oregon is a PAC-10 school. But in reality, the NCAA should never allow thi...

Phillies sweep Astros

11:39 PM Sun, Sep 17, 2006 |
Butch Alsandor

Maybe its just the baseball gods getting even with
the Astros, but a September run to the playoffs is
starting to look more and more remote .

The Phillies topped the Astros 6-4 on Sunday completing
a weekend sweep at Minute Maid, leaving the Astros
6 and a half games back in the race for the wildcard.

For Texans same story new chapter vs Colts

11:19 PM Sun, Sep 17, 2006 |
Butch Alsandor

In the blink of an eye it was over .
There was no time to run to the fridge for a beer
or a snack .

If you did , you missed the first two touchdowns as
the Colts blasted the Texans 43-to-24.

Will the Texans offense be their best Defense ?

3:19 PM Thu, Sep 14, 2006 |
Butch Alsandor

Watching Texans cornerback dunta robinson glide through
another practice session, I couldn't help but think he's going
to be a busy man on Sunday.

Robinson understands Peyton Manning will present a stern test
for the Texans secondary.
But at this point, he's not concerned with the point spread
for the game, Manning's completion percentage ,
or even the lotto numbers .

Can the Texans finally beat the Colts ?

9:25 PM Wed, Sep 13, 2006 |
Butch Alsandor

After going to the Texans locker room on Wednesday
it was clear to me that in the N.F.L.,
there's not much time to celebrate the victories ,
or mourn the losses .

What I saw was a Texans team that had already moved
on from the loss to the eagles , and was now focusing in
on Peyton and the Colts.

Quarterback David Carr talked about the fine job Emmitt Smith
did on "Dancing with the Stars". Hopefully the Texans offensive line
will keep David from seeing stars when they met the Colts .

Texans trade speed for power

5:45 PM Wed, Sep 13, 2006 |
Butch Alsandor

The Texans promised to make improvements in their running game
after rushing for only 70 yards for the Eagles , and it didn't take
them long to address the problem.

On Wednesday, the team acquired running back Samkon Gado
from the Green Bay Packers , for running back Vernand Morency.

It's not going the Astros way!!!!!

5:27 PM Tue, Sep 12, 2006 |

I was talking to Roger Clemens earlier today. He just got back from Minute Maid Park where he was testing his injured groin and he told me although it wasn't totally 100% he felt like he was on course to start Friday night when the team opens it's final homestand of the year playing Philadelphia. But the big question, is it too late for the Astros to make the playoffs?
In the last couple of years, you could feel the momentum building with this club coming down the stretch. They were doing incredible things on the field and the fans around here were anticipating every game knowing the Astros were going to w...

Getting hammered on my first week of picks

5:06 PM Tue, Sep 12, 2006 |

So I went nine for sixteen on my picks for the first week of the NFL season and I'm getting embarrassed by my co-anchor Lisa Foronda. She's actually very nice about the whole thing as she picked 11 right but just the fact that on the website it says "who beat Giff" and there's her smiling face is difficult to handle. I put a lot of research into what was going to happen in the games and thought I had it nailed. She used her own unique way which was so unsophisticated and she whipped up on not only me but also Greg and Len. So we will go at it again in week two and I'm guaranteeing a victory at least over her. ...

Kubiak and Texans learning from defeat.

they got a glimpse of what the future could be .

Big honor for three Texans

1:00 PM Sat, Sep 09, 2006 |
Butch Alsandor

If the Texans were nervous about Sunday's game vs
the Eagles , I saw no signs of it on Friday.

I was in the team's locker room after a brief practice
session and the muisc was loud , there was lots
of laughter , and these guys seemed really relaxed
and ready to play.

On friday he told me, "Not in my wildest dreams did I think this was possible."

Backe looking to come backeeee

5:42 PM Thu, Sep 07, 2006 |

Astros pitcher Brandon Backe had successful surgery on his right elbow today. The procedure is called Tommy John surgery which basically is a reconstruction of the tendons in his throwing arm.
The recovery time is extensive as it is expected to take between twelve to eighteen months. So really the Astros are not expecting him back before the 2008 season.
Several pitchers have had the surgery and have comeback to have successful careers including the Braves John Smoltz, Cy Young winner Pat Hentgen and the Phillies Randy Wolf who pitched against the Astros Wednesday night.

Longhorns look loose, relaxed on practice field, as Buckeye fans arrive in Austin

8:55 PM Wed, Sep 06, 2006 |

AUSTIN -- As I attended Wednesday's workout at the Longhorns outdoor practice field ..... I was struck by a number of different images.

Number 1 ..... The Longhorns looked loose and relaxed. They had the same attitude as they approached January's national championship game at the Rose Bowl. If you're a Texas fan I think that's very good news. Music blared over the loudspeakers the entire time the Longhorns were stretching and loosening up. Redshirt freshman Colt McCoy and junior receiver Limas Sweed (out of Brenham H.S.) may have been the loosest of all.

Texans hyped for Eagles

4:09 PM Wed, Sep 06, 2006 |
Butch Alsandor

The Texans Wednesday lockerroom session
and workout were both pretty lively today.

Even defensive end Anthony Weaver, who's starting
his 5th season in the N.F.L. said he was a little
nervous about the season opener .
