Water, water, 8 glasses of water - Let me count the ways

By Mallory Bray

How many times have we heard we should drink eight glasses of water a day? Well, you will hear it from me again.
MalloryBrayx.jpgYes, I know it is easier said than done and some of us struggle with this request more than others. But if we don't consume enough water, water retention could set in, and then you have water weight gain and may feel bloated. If we don't keep replenishing our bodies with water whether at rest or play, the body may hold onto the water as a reserve until the next time you refill your body with water.
It's a good idea to have a glass of water in the morning when you wake up, for a good clean start to your day. Drink water before, during, and after exercise, and drinking a glass of water between meals may make you feel fuller and could help to have better portion control at a meal.
Here comes the good part: There are ways to make drinking water more fun! Put several slices of lemon in a glass or water bottle of water. It looks pretty, tastes good, and helps to clean out your system. How about adding slices of oranges, sprigs of fresh mint or one part cranberry juice to four parts water! You can fill a water bottle with four parts water, orange slices, ¼ part cranberry juice, 1/8 part apple juice with a dash of cinnamon. It almost tastes like apple cider!

Treat Calories Like Money
by Mallory Bray

We monitor and budget the money in our wallets, but are we as careful about the calories we consume? If you don't keep a food journal and spend your daily calories wisely, you may overspend, and as a result, you will have overeaten!  Overeating on a calorie budget is the same as spending on a credit card.  Charge the credit card, work off the debt later - and how many of us never seem to work off the debt, or take years to do because of unforeseen circumstances?  The same goes for our bodies.
Stop overstuffing your body with unnecessary products, commit to exercise regularly, and your "health and fitness portfolio" will improve just like getting out of debt!
One simple way to start a healthier lifestyle is to write a food journal. You can make it as simple or as detailed as you wish to make it. The first steps are:
• Eat five times a day
• Eat from all the food groups:  Five fruit servings, four to five vegetable servings, two carb servings, and one fat serving.
• Try to incorporate vegetables and fruits into every meal.
• Write down everything consumed (including, condiments, jam, butter, and cooking oils)
• Kick the salt habit. Use salt-free seasonings!
•  Decide how many calories you are going to eat per meal, and do your best to stick to it. If you like, meals can be pre-written out so you know what you are going to eat and when.
 Note: *Ladies - 1,200-1,500 calories a day, and guys - 1,800 to 2,200 calories.
Caloric intake can be specifically determined based on height and weight through a weight loss program or personal trainer

Students: your major matters

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

Student.jpgWith school starting, students will be thinking about what college they'll want to go to, what their major will be, and what job is going to pay enough to get them out of mom and dad's house. This info, courtesy of Metro Creative Services, might help:
College students majoring in Chemical Engineering can expect to earn more than their fellow graduates right out of the gate. According to a study by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), new college graduates with degrees in Chemical Engineering were offered an average of $59,361 in the summer of 2007. That's a better than five percent increase from the salaries they were offered the year before. Computer engineering grads were second on the list, fielding offers that averaged slightly more than $56,000 per year directly out of college. Rounding out the top five were graduates with Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science degrees, each of whom averaged offers better than $53,000 per year right out of college.
What's your major and why? Let me know - you could be chosen for a Spotlight profile on the Web site.
