Not-So-Perfect Parent: Operation Hope Part III

7:22 AM Wed, Nov 26, 2008 |
Paige

Day Three:

All of us have bonded with the kids. It's amazing how quickly that happens - especially when cultures and languages are so different. Maybe it's because they are children. Somehow the innocence of children erases the barriers that often stump grown-ups.

My role here is to be an observer - and I have. I have observed these teenagers - all adopted - and how their hearts have been changed. I have observed the pre...

Day Two:

We got on our bus and headed to the orphanage. The scenes from the bus were really difficult to take in. We in America have this illusion that we know what poverty looks like. We've rolled through tough neighborhoods and have seen people holding cardboard signs at intersections. But this is a different level of poverty. Children - babies - forced to beg on the streets. Their eyes look vacant as they struggle to ...

It has been several months since I returned home from Guatemala. But the memories remain sharp in my mind. I kept a journal of my experience and am eager to share it with you now.

Day One: Operation Hope
The plane ride was a great way to get to know some of the kids. They all came from different backgrounds and different parts of the country. In fact, the only thing that they had in common was the fact that they were all adop...

Not-So-Perfect Parent: The Rebirth of Layaway!

For me, the currant financial crisis has completely rocked my world. After-all, I am a child of the '80's - the Yuppie Generation that wished and received in all the same breath. For the first time in my life - I am clipping coupons before my weekly grocery store visit and standing in the aisle for 15 minutes trying to find the best deal on green beans.

Retailers are responding to our high blood pressure by reincarnating an old co...

Not-So-Perfect Parent: Yes We Can!

"Yes We Can" - a theme that defined the Obama campaign. I recently interviewed a bunch of kids from an organization called "Texas Can" - a last-chance school for would-be drop outs. What was extraordinary about these kids is that they really had no business in school. They were the products of a statistical cycle that should have left them in the projects and on the streets - just like their parents and parents' parents. But each ...

Not-So-Perfect Parent: Rainbows and Slides!

"Mommy, I had a bad dream!"

He stood at the foot of my bed in his Spider Man pajamas

"What happened in your dream," I ask sleepily.

He crawled in my bed and snuggled next to me.

"I dreamed that I fell out of an airplane window."

"That must be so scary. Let's dream about happy things....like rainbows and all of their pretty colors!"

"Will the rainbow catch me when I fall? I bet it will - and the...

• "Edutainment" it's Educational & Entertaining
• Terrific alternative to TV and video games

Not-So-Perfect Parent: Lost Keys!

I was loading up the kids for a special trip to McDonalds. It was the end-of-season baseball party for my youngest, Luke. Remember that he missed his last game of the season because I could not find my keys anywhere.

As I was putting him in his car seat he said,

"Mommy, pwweessse don't lose your keys because I am soooo hungry!"
