Paige: December 2007 ArchivesMy sister called me in tears. Her nine-year-old discovered the secret of Santa. Although the truth of Santa is something that all children go through, it’s a heartbreaking milestone. It many ways, it represents an end of innocence – an end to the magic and make-believe that exists in the minds of children. My oldest is eight and I know it’s only a matter of time before he stops buying into the whole flying reindeer, little elves... I’ve lost him… I’m talking about my eight-year-old. He has officially left me for the temptations of sports, friends, and school. I look back on the times when he asked me to play Candy Land or Hide-and-Seek and I regret – truly regret choosing work, cleaning, or the other pointless details of life over precious time with him. Sounds pretty depressing, but I still have bedtimes and morning snuggles. I will be at the basketball pract... Last night at bedtime, we had a Christmas Quiz. “Where does Santa live?”, “How many reindeer does he have?”, “How many times does he check his list?”. To keep a little perspective, I decided to throw in a few questions about the real reason for Christmas. “Who was born on Christmas Day?” “JESUS!” my youngest shouts. “No fair”, says the older brother. “He gets double presents!” ... |
