Paige: June 2007 ArchivesThe question was simple, “Which fast-food grilled chicken sandwich do you think is the best?” The debate had been ensuing among members of the Sport Department before the question was posed to me. Several of the sports guys stood awaiting my answer. I refused to name only one and they settled for my top three. The conversation went something like this: “Number one choice … Jack in the Box.” “Jack in the Box?” one colleague... Rain, rain, and more rain. Like a child pouting over another missed baseball game, I look out the window and hum “Rain Rain Go Away Come Again Another Day”. Although I know there will come a time in the near future (sometime in August when it is 120 degrees in the shade) that I will miss the rain and the cooler temperatures. But for now, I must confess, the gloominess of the skies is contagious and I’m feeling a bit blue. I’ve got... I took my youngest for a summer night out at the ice cream store. While we were deciding between Bubble Gum flavor or Dutch Chocolate, my little boy spotted a potential new friend. His name was Will and the two of them really hit it off. They shared their ice creams and played outside on the sidewalk. I was able to visit with Will’s mom. She and her husband had just moved into town and bought a home in the neighborhood. Conversation flow... I picked up my son from his first overnight camp experience. Thankfully, they thought better of having the closing ceremony at the horse stables with the flies and the manure and chose instead to have the event in the air conditioned Rec Hall. The parents waited until the campers made their grand entrance. Sweaty boys and girls ran in, screaming greetings to their moms and dads. I was thrilled to see Colton, but not as excited as his litt... I am clinging on to my thirties with a fierce grip. I dread the big 4 – 0 and have found myself depressed feeling my youth slipping away. Recently, my best friend and I met at the gym in our futile attempt to tighten the skin that age has loosened. We were surrounded by little 20-year-olds and with little 20-year-old tight bodies. We started commiserating on the future of 40 and I shared my depression about this dreaded milestone. When I... If there was a popularity contest at my house, I would lose hands down. And frankly, I’m more than a little ticked off about it. Both of my boys fight over my husband’s attention. “Daddy, tuck me in!” “I want to ride in the car with Daddy!” “Daddy, sit next to me!” “I call being on Daddy’s team!” Last night was the worst when my youngest said, “I'm sorry Mommy, I gave all of my snuggles to Daddy!” Not that I am trying to throw a p... I didn’t sleep well last night. But my tossing and turning was not due to the typical worries of tomorrow – instead, my restlessness was a result of my oldest son being at summer camp for the first time. Is he too hot? Is he too cold? What if he falls out of the top bunk he insisted on? Will the kids be mean? Did I pack the right stuff? Will he be homesick? Will he get a parasite from all of the lake water he swallows? I pra... My days of freedom have slipped by and I am in the final moments of my alone time. My husband and children are on their way home. As I sit here, enjoying the silence of the moment, I realize that my house has not been this clean since my oldest son was born. In a matter of minutes, backpacks, balls, electronics, stuffed animals, dirty clothes and wet swim suits will invade this space and my life will return to its normal chaos. Al... Home Alone! My children and my husband are gone for three days and I am flying solo. It’s a weird feeling going through the day not constantly checking my watch for the countdown to carpool. What’s even more exciting is that I am in possession of the remote control. My husband nor my children can force me to watch Blues Clues reruns on the Golf Channel. I am free!!! Yes, it’s true. There are moments when I miss them. But, I firmly... When I was a little girl, I wasn’t into imaginary friends. One of my neighborhood buddies, Sue Ellen, had one and, to be honest, I thought she was a little weird. She would always want “Glenda” to play with us. What kind of freaked me out was when she said things like, “Glenda doesn’t like to play Monopoly” or “Glenda is hungry, can we have a snack?” Usually, I was the third man out and Sue Ellen and Glenda always agreed. When it came do...
I will pull into the driveway and try to avoid running over my dog who stands in the path of my car, barking an... I love to watch a child delight in simple things. The kinds of things that are almost invisible to grown-ups as we wallow in the details. Yesterday, my youngest sat in front of an oscillating fan singing “Twinkle-Twinkle Little Star” and giggling periodically hearing his voice altered by the swirling blades. He loved to push the button on top delighted that the fan would start and stop on his command. He was fascinated and I was fascinated... I am back on the positive thinking train, and I have a pretty incredible story to tell. My husband and my sister-in-law (his sister) asked me to go to the grocery store for a few items before a Saturday afternoon cookout. For purposes of background, both my husband and his sister have the “get it right because if you don’t, I am going to tell you what you did wrong” gene. They try to control this urge, but they can’t seem to help it.... |
