Not-So-Perfect Parent: Toddler, Tiaras, and Fake Teeth!

I would hate to be interrogated on my television choices. It would be difficult to admit that my palate for television viewing consists of such shows like "Toddlers and Tiaras". But the truth is - I am giddy when I get to watch my TIVO-ed marathon of new episodes.
"Toddlers and Tiaras" is a TLC show which uncovers the reality of Child Beauty Pageants. In some ways, it's like watching a freak-show. Now I'm not - in any way - saying that the kids are freaks (even with the fake hair, fake nails, fake lashes, and fake teeth), no - I am specifically talking about the moms. They are the ones that are investing thousands of dollars in fake hair, fake nails, fake lashes, and fake teeth in order for their little princess to win a crown. Now the crazy thing (scratch that) ONE of the crazy things is that even the Grand Champion Miss. Starlight of Southern County would not win enough to make a dent in cost of the hand-studded chaps with matching fringe vest outfit used for the talent portion of the event. No - these moms are not in it for the money. They are in to dress their little girls like Barbie's and live-out their lost dreams of being the prettiest one on stage. They stand in front of the stage doing the motions of the routine that they have required their daughter to practice 500 times in order to get it "Princess Perfect!". It's pretty frightening.

I would love to get your take on this glittery spectacle. If we had a fast-forward button - how do you think these Baby-Alive Dolls are going to fare in 15 years? What about their relationship with their stage moms? I would love to hear from you!!

Hello Paige!!! I have to tell you that now that my baby has gone to kindergarten (love the blog post on Aug. 25th), I am able to sit and spend time with you nearly everyday. How fun for me!

You're doing GREAT, and I love seeing how God has blessed your career.

BTW--I, too, somehow have gotten sucked into Toddlers and Tiaras. I think it's like watching a train wreck--you know you shouldn't watch it, but you can't turn away. I think these poor girls will be so ruined on the idea that their worth is all about their looks and accomplishments. I fear they will never fear they are good enough, and they will seek approval wherever they can find it. Resentment is bound to spring from their relationship with their moms--in my humble opinion! I am a mama who constantly has to work against the world's influences to tell my little 5 year old darling that what makes her beautiful is her kind and loving heart.

So, my two cents on that. Way to go on milking that goat, friend! I know you are very busy, but it would be a treat to get to grab lunch with you some time.

God bless!
heather
