With the economy in a slump, many moms may be faced with the need to return to the workforce. This can be really tough - particularily for women who feel like they are being forced or dragged back into the rat race. Although the transition can be painful - it also offers many positive points. Consider the fact that you can once again return to your pre-baby identity. Remember her?? The professional, competent conquer-the-world woman who did not have crushed Cheetos in the back-seat or would never be seen wearing sensible shoes? Yes, that person is still in there and you have a new opportunity to resurrect your inner-professional.
So for those of you who are having to trade playgrounds for paychecks, here are a few tips.
Take an Inventory
This is a golden opportunity for you to do some soul searching and evaluate what career path interests you. Although the current economy may limit your choices, you can assess ways in which you hope to grow from both a career perspective and from an emotional perspective. Once you have identified some areas of interest, I highly recommend creating a plan that includes your goals and objectives. A plan gives you direction in unchartered territory.
Get Educated
I am not saying necessarily going back to school - although that may be appropriate depending on your career goals. What I am saying is do research and assess the current culture in your selected career options. Educate yourself about the news, trends, and regulations affecting your industry. Also, you may need to take some refresher course or computer skills training just to make sure your skill-sets are in order.
Start Networking
It really is who you know that makes a difference. Most jobs are landed as a result of knowing people or having personal relationships with individuals within a company. Start spreading the word that you are looking for work and schedule informational interviews with people who are successful in the industry of your choice. Keep up with those contacts and follow-up consistently.
Update Resume
It is essential that your resume is update. Remember not to apologize for gaps in your employment. Many employers respect the decision to stay-at-home. Also, include any volunteer projects your chaired or participated in. Remember, your time with your kids was productive and should be counted. Consult with an expert or friend when developing your resume.
Dress for Success
You got to look good! Dressing for success is essential. Consider working with a fashion consultant to ensure that you have the basics to build your wardrobe.

Several Moms I know are struggling with this same issue. It doesn't have to be doom and gloom, and can actually be exciting. We ran several articles in January '09 on this topic on www.momsoutloud.com. One of them was: 9 Tips for SAHM's Re-entering the Work Force (http://www.momsoutloud.com/momsknow and either search for "work" or browse archives).
