Not-So-Perfect Parent: Homeschool

The Homeschool movement is continuing to grow in this country. Increasingly, families are "Just Saying No" to traditional schools. On today's show, I introduced you to Rosie Watson, director of Creative Arts in Action. She offers supplies and curriculum for homeschool families as well as strong opinions on the benefits of homeschooling. I also introduced you to two Homeschooled kids - one who graduated and one who is a sophomore.

I use to be of the belief that homeschooled kids were typically from ultra-conservative Christian families who were being sheltered from the evils of the world. But now, it's clear that homeschooled kids come from a variety of backgrounds and participate in many social activities. Although I don't think my kids will be homeschooled (largely because of my teaching limitations more than anything else), I am increasingly more intrigued by this movement. What is your opinion on this subject? Weigh in and give me your thoughts!

I have three kids. The oldest at age 22 has mild Asperger, as does my youngest at age 10. I have always wanted to try Homeschooling, but feared in not being capable in supporting my kids. Is there a group of home schooling families in Plano, Texas that I can contact/meet up with?

As a homeschool parent for the past 16 years, I can tell you that homeschooling is not just for the traditional family. After homeschooling my 8 children for 13 years, I suddenly found myself to be the sole provider and caregiver for the remaining 7 children in our home. With the resources at Creative Arts in Action, I was able to work full-time, and with the help of my 18 year old who had been homeschooled her whole life, and continue homeschooling the remaining school-aged children.
Rosie really hit the nail on the head when she said it's all about the parent's commitment to her children.
I've wrestled with the idea of putting my kids in a traditional school, but the primary reason would be to make my life easier. I've decided that my kids are worth the sarifice so that they can pursue their passions and live their dreams.

I wish Hannah had been able to talk briefly about the book she has written. I don't think this could have been possible had she been in a traditional school setting. Pursuing individual passions is one of the best reasons for homeschooling.

For the first person who commented: there are organizations that help with teaching autistic and various other modified needs. You may check into the homeschool book fair that occurs in May in Arlington. Also, Rosie Watson at Creative Arts in Action may be able to point you to the right place for help.
The homeschooling interviews were great.
