Not-So-Perfect Parent: Waste Not, Want Not!

"Waste Not. Want Not." I have no clue who coined the phrase - but it really applies to our new Green generation. Still, parents (many of us who still suck soda from a styrofoam cup and buy $2.00 water bottles) have no idea how to be green and how to encourage our kids to be green.

Sandra Witten owns a clever website called www.greenstiletto.com. She has great ideas for keeping the whole family resourceful and eco-friendly.

"I think the easiest way to begin to teach our children about waste is with paper towels," says Sandra. "I think we all would be amazed at how many paper towels we use in a day, a week or a month. Start by using a separate container just for paper towels - you and your children will be amazed at the amount we throw away. Paper towels create 3,000 tons of waste per day." So what's the alternative? Sandra says the answer is simple. "Cloth dish towel! Use this especially for drying your hands. Put your family on a "paper towel diet" You get one roll per week, make a game out of it for your children - and see how much paper you can save! If you must use paper towels, you can re use them (Visual aid of brawny paper towel) Even brawny is suggesting re use! Another fun game that you can play with the kids is to give them each a roll of toilet paper - who ever makes it last the longest wins!"

You can find many more of Sandra's ideas by going to her website. Let me know what you are doing at home to keep things green.
