My sister called me in tears. Her nine-year-old discovered the secret of Santa. Although the truth of Santa is something that all children go through, it’s a heartbreaking milestone. It many ways, it represents an end of innocence – an end to the magic and make-believe that exists in the minds of children. My oldest is eight and I know it’s only a matter of time before he stops buying into the whole flying reindeer, little elves, and bearded man in a chimney. Soon, as his mind matures, he will no longer be able convince himself that it’s real and he will have to believe the rumors that he’s hearing from his friends that the whole Santa thing is a lie. I am going to do my best not to be consumed by the fact that this will probably be his last year and instead enjoy every minute – every second – and pray I will not allow holiday details spoil the little bit of magic left for him and for me. |
