Okay, are you ready for this… I went to a CHRISTMAS party last night. Yes, it's November 7 and I went to a CHRISTMAS party. This was not a “holiday” party - I’m talking Christmas trees, red and green table cloths, and “Jingle Bells” playing in the background. So I ask you…. what happened to Thanksgiving?? Have we come to the point where we slide right into Santa before we can finish off the Halloween candy? Now I know the retailers have been pushing us towards this for several years. But I have stayed strong and civilized and resisted such nonsense as putting up the tree before Black Friday. But now I am already feeling the pressure. Already feeling the urge to skip the pumpkin pie and hang some lights instead. The problem is that if I start this early, by the second week in December I will be sick of anything having to do with elves or presents or mistletoe. I will be saying things like, “Christmas has become so commercial” and take on an Ebenezer demeanor as I avoid eye contact with those Good Samaritans wearing a Santa hat and ringing the bell outside of Wal-Mart. So how do we save Thanksgiving? Maybe we could exchange Thanksgiving-related gifts, like Native American jewelry or Honey-Baked gift cards. Or maybe start a tradition where you Trick-or-Treat for left-overs, where everyone dresses up as pilgrims and carries zip lock freezer bags. |
