Not-So-Perfect Parent: Assistant Vice Principal for a Day

My son was Assistant Vice Principal for ½ a day. I know what you’re thinking…. “Assistant Vice Principal for ½ a day?? Boy, you must have a pretty great kid to receive that kind of honor!”

But alas, this prestigious title was not awarded because of good behavior and excellent grades. Instead, his father and I spent and un-Godly amount of money after having too many margaritas at last year’s school auction. Still, my son was pretty fired up about it and the entire family, (including a not-so-happy little brother who felt it unfair that big brother got an official name tag to wear and his choice of Chic-fil-et or McDonald’s) escorted him to the office to receive his honor.

The best part of the day had to be saying the pledge of allegiance over the loud speaker. Although he was a little nervous, Colton did not miss a word and even pronounced “Indivisible” correctly. Soon afterwards, we took a quick trip to his classroom to drop off his back pack. Folks, let me tell you, the fastest way to gain celebrity status in the second grade is to talk over the loud speaker. As we walked to his classroom, kids we passed in the hall shouted “COLTON!! COLTON!! TOUCH MY HAND!!” and “COLTON, SAY ‘HI’ TO ME!!” and “THERE’S COLTON! HE IS THE ASSISTANT VICE PRINCIPAL TODAY!” Some little blond first grade girl said, “Hey Colt. I’ll see you on the playground.” Meanwhile, I was following behind him with my camera. I looked like the paparazzi stalking him.

As if that wasn’t enough, Colt was able to carry around a walkie-talkie. That did it! You simply couldn’t get any cooler than that. The kids gathered around to hear Colt’s exchange with the principal. He was radioing in reports from the playground.

All in all, it was an exciting day…I guess sometimes you do actually get what you pay for!
