It is bedtime. PJ’s on, teeth brushed, stories told, and finally lights out. “But wait, Mommy!” I hear from my three year old. I turn around – tired and irritated and eager to greet my bed for the evening. “What is it?” I say. Before his brother could stop him, Luke said, “We didn’t tuck in Buster…”. Our old dog, on his 13th year, lies at the foot of the bed, as he does every night. Apparently, after “Lights Out” has been called, the boys sneak from under the covers and lie on the floor next to their dog and sing a lullaby. I was happy to be in on the secret and I lay with them and we all stroked him softly. Soon, he was snoring happily and my oldest looked triumphant. He whispered, “It works every time.” The song they chose was the one I used every night while rocking my babies to sleep. Now my babies have turned into boys and pass on their lullaby to their faithful friend. |
