My son turned eight years old. The night before his birthday, we sat on the bed and looked at his baby book. He wanted to hear every detail about the day he was born. However, our moment was quickly interrupted when baby brother came in barely able to hold his baby book in both arms. “What about me?” he says. “Let’s look in my baby book”. I started to explain that it was his brother’s birthday and that it was his special time before my oldest interrupted. “It’s okay mom. Come on Luke, let’s look at your baby book too.” They both snuggled up and giggled seeing pictures of themselves in the bath tub and wearing Halloween costumes that would not be nearly cool enough by their currant standards. I was impressed by how much my oldest has accepted his younger brother into his world – only complaining when his brother touches his coveted light saber or when he throws a toy train at his head. Taking a cue from this moment, and concerned about the presents that would accompany the upcoming birthday party, I warned my youngest of the gifts his brother would be receiving. For what I thought was a momentary personality exchange with a passing angel, my little one said, “I know, it’s Bubba’s birthday.” I have to give it to him, he managed to get through the forty-seven presents all addressed to someone else before shedding a tear. Fortunately, we were prepared for the expected break-down and offered up the three dollar toy we bought to serve as a diversion. It worked!! He waded through the discarded wrapping paper and proudly showed his new treasure to his brother. “Don’t worry Bubba”, he explained, “You’ll get another present when it’s my birthday!” 1 CommentsLeave a comment |
How unusual that Colton had to share his moment in the spotlight with Luke. That is so unlike Luke. How fun that Luke received a present on Colton's birthday. Lukey, Lukey, Lukey....
