Not-So-Perfect Parent: Positive Predictions - Outcome: Part One

Each day this week, I will offer the outcome of the Positive Predictions I created for our family vacation. Tune in each day to see if my Positive Predictions prevailed or if they succumbed to Rude Reality.

Part One: Plane Ride to Chicago
It was pouring when I left for the airport. I met my family and my husband hurried us to the gate – determined to get on an earlier flight. He pleaded with the ticket agent who had “I’ve heard it all” plastered on her face. She finally directed us to a standby option eighteen gates away. We grabbed the kids and four pieces of carry-on luggage and trekked down to the other end of the terminal. When we finally arrived, we were told that our standby flight had been delayed and that we would arrive at our destination earlier if we stuck to the original flight. Still wearing the high heels I had on from work, I glared at my husband, grabbed a backpack and a kid and limped back the eighteen gates I just passed.

When we finally got on board, the pilot announced that take-off would be delayed because the refreshment truck was held up. One of the passengers yelled, “Let’s blow off the munchies and get going!” Another agreed, “Yeah! I vote for lift off versus $5 cashews!” I sat there secretly praying that the flight crew would not be persuaded. That we would not take-off without my obligatory glass of wine needed to handle unexpected turbulence and two kids. Thank God the pilot held firm and the plane was stocked before we pushed back from the gate.
