July 2007 ArchivesI went bra shopping with my thirteen-year-old niece. It kinda freaked me out. It was weird to be shopping for bras with someone who, what seemed like just yesterday, was crawling on the floor dragging her stuffed bunny around. It also brought back memories about when I went with my mother to purchase my first bra. I was pretty neurotic about it. I would lurk around departments of the store refusing to set foot in the lingerie s... My son turned eight years old. The night before his birthday, we sat on the bed and looked at his baby book. He wanted to hear every detail about the day he was born. However, our moment was quickly interrupted when baby brother came in barely able to hold his baby book in both arms. “What about me?” he says. “Let’s look in my baby book”. I started to explain that it was his brother’s birthday and that it was his special time before my o... I really don’t mind my commute. I drive 45 minutes to an hour both ways. It ‘s my chance to change into my new persona before arriving at my destination. My car serves as the phone booth that Clark Kent would use before transforming into Superman. In the mornings, I transform from snotty-nose-wiper Mighty Mom into high-heel-wearing Power Pro. In the afternoons, I morph back into my domestic alter ego. I feel like I need that li... Recently, I read this wonderful article about a woman who, at the age of 53 decided to have another baby. Already the mother of three children ages 15 to 30, award-winning journalist Karen Day along with her husband Fred, decided to roll the dice one more time and, with the help of invitro fertilization, had a healthy baby boy. She reflects on her decision by writing the following: “A baby is a reminder as strong as headlines fro... “What book is this?” My three-year-old asked this question while holding his father’s baptism Bible. The tattered book is just like you imagine. Small, white, with red lettering for Jesus’ words. This Bible is unique in that it has a zipper (now rusted) securing the contents. I have always thought that books with locks or with zippers were particularly special- so special that the contents needed extra protection as if the words ... Summer vacation is finally over. Our little weary band of travelers returned home late Sunday night. Although I would love to recap my trip, I will spare you the verbal slide show and simply talk about the highlights. Scratch that – one highlight. It happened unexpectently. We went on a hike along the trail to Adams Falls – a beautiful site nestled in the quaint community of Grand Lake, Colorado. The hike takes you through some ...
My sister, being one of a handful of loyal blog readers, continued my "Positive Predictions" when writing about the second half of my vacation. Our trip to Colorado will begin a few days after our trip to Wisconsin. Enjoy! Paige, I haven’t heard from you since you left on vacation, so I can only assume that all of your positive predictions from your blog came true. I was a little disappointed, however, that you did not me...
The rest of the vacation went so smoothly that it is almost too boring to write about. We fished a lot and ate a lot. We spent two hours finding the flattest, smoothest, bestest skipping rocks and took turns skimming them across Lake Michigan. We ate at a restaurant that had grass and goats on the roof (yes grass and goats) and attended our first ever fish boil. Most of the time we hung out – laughing and playing and being a family. ...
Part Four: Road Trip to Lake House Somewhere in Wisconsin The God’s were on our side when our six pieces of luggage arrived. In addition, because the Green Bay airport is so small, the rental car stand was located within spitting distance of baggage claim. We loaded up the car and headed north up the coast of Wisconsin. Although we didn’t spot any roadside charming cheese houses (not that it mattered – my husband was not about to p...
Part Three: Plane Ride to Wisconsin
When we arrived in Chicago, my husband looked at his family of weary travelers and decided to ante-up for an overnight stay at the airport hotel rather than taking a shuttle to Motel Cheapo four miles away. What a treat! Daddy took the kids swimming while I stayed in the room and ordered room service. My kids had never experienced such luxury. They squealed when the sliver covers were removed and hamburgers and grilled cheese sandwiches we...
Each day this week, I will offer the outcome of the Positive Predictions I created for our family vacation. Tune in each day to see if my Positive Predictions prevailed or if they succumbed to Rude Reality. Part One: Plane Ride to Chicago We are about to embark on our family summer vacation. In our family, we have a tendency to do things in a complicated manner. We don’t take the direct flight to the all-inclusive resort. No, for our vacation, we are going to Wisconsin – a destination that takes two plane trips, an overnight lay over, and a three-hour car ride. Oh, and I did I mention, my two children, ages 7 and 3, will be tagging along. Now, I know what you’re t... I found an old journal of mine. It’s a Hello Kitty diary that I kept when I was in Junior High. Although I frequently move it around from one shelf to another when rummaging through my closet, last night it called out to me. Once I picked it up, I couldn’t put it down. I read all about the boys I had crushes on, the teachers who were mean, and heartbreaking memories such as my brother going to college. I was impressed that I wrote... |
