Not-So-Perfect Parent: Over Before it Began

I took my youngest for a summer night out at the ice cream store. While we were deciding between Bubble Gum flavor or Dutch Chocolate, my little boy spotted a potential new friend. His name was Will and the two of them really hit it off. They shared their ice creams and played outside on the sidewalk. I was able to visit with Will’s mom. She and her husband had just moved into town and bought a home in the neighborhood. Conversation flowed easily and I was excited about the prospect of a new friend for Luke and a new friend for me. I shared some insights into the school district, the best shopping malls, and my favorite pizza place. Things were going very well until she said,

“Well, we are going to be living here for only a year. My husband is finishing is residency in Fort Worth but he wants to start his practice back home. We are considering this a one-year adventure.”

That’s it – relationship over. Call it a character flaw, but I don’t want to invest in a friendship that has a predetermined end date. For a few brief moments, I mourned the loss of play dates and birthday parties. I thought of all the girls’ night outs that wouldn’t happen and mentally removed her from my Bunko list. I wanted to warn her to not share her departure plan with other potential friends. Just like in a romantic relationship, you wouldn’t want to get involved if he says, “I’m only here for a little while and then I movin’ on.”

Don’t get me wrong, I will be friendly to her when I run into her at the park or see her at the school. But pursuing a friendship is out of the question. I can’t afford to get too attached.

Hey friend,
I hate to be the one to do this, but as I recall, when WE met there was a "predetermined end date" of about two years! I'd hate to see you miss out on a great friendship just because of a date on the calendar! Our friendship has well outlasted that "end date!" In August, we will have been out of Grad School for 10 years!!!! Can you believe that? I'm glad to say that our friendship has outlasted distance and time...hope to see you guys soon!

Chris

BTW...you're supposed to be e-mailing me! It's your turn!
