I am back on the positive thinking train, and I have a pretty incredible story to tell. My husband and my sister-in-law (his sister) asked me to go to the grocery store for a few items before a Saturday afternoon cookout. For purposes of background, both my husband and his sister have the “get it right because if you don’t, I am going to tell you what you did wrong” gene. They try to control this urge, but they can’t seem to help it. I have seen my husband walk around the house with his mouth slammed shut - trying desperately not give into to the impulse to nit-pick my accidental blunders - only for it to burst open with an entire commentary on my day’s missteps. The automatic doors fly open and I enter armed with my list and a grocery cart. It was early in the morning and I was the only one in the produce section. My first conquest was a loaf of bread. To be exact, I needed to get “Natures Own, Honey Whole Wheat, 7 Grain Bread – the kind that’s not Sugar-Free” (The "not sugar-free" part was emphasized several times. Apparently, a recent experiment with the sugar-free kind was not tasty). I start heading to the bread section, my mind already swimming trying to absorb the thousands of options in front of me. When all of a sudden, a loaf of bread spontaneously falls from the shelf to the floor. I walk over to it, looking around for whoever caused the drop. As I stand above it, chills run down my spine as I read, “Natures Own, Honey Whole Wheat, 7 Grain Bread” (the words “Sugar-Free” absent from the label). It is as if an angel from God felt sorry for me and tipped the loaf with her undetectable wing. I carefully picked it up, placed it in my cart, said thank-you to my invisible friend, and returned home triumphant. After all, the five-second rule certainly applies when we’re talkin’ a souvenir from heaven! |
