Not-So-Perfect Parent: Happy Thoughts

I saw a billboard yesterday that read “Misery Has Enough Company. Dare to be Happy.” Pretty profound reading when you’re going 65 on the tollway. I reflected on this for the rest of my commute to Fort Worth.

I believe that being happy really is a state of mind. For example, I received some discouraging news today. In most circumstances, this type of news would set me back and I would obsess about it for days. I decided to change my thoughts. Literally replace the negative thoughts with something more positive. I have developed a bank of these happy thoughts that I can access when I am overwhelmed with negative images.

My favorite is being in the bed early in the morning with my two boys. Snuggles are usually followed by kisses and the morning is finally faced with tickles and a pillow fight. These thoughts center me and I realize that having the blessing of these moments, the memory of these moments, are truly all I need to sustain me through the yucky times.

I know this may sound a bit cliché, but get to your Happy Place – it is always there for you, no matter what the day brings.
