I have been doing an experiment lately. My son is in an after-school program called “Thursday Boys” (see February 19th blog). Every Thursday, two hundred plus kids ranging from ages 5 – 15 meet in a local park for games, snacks and lessons on sportsmanship. It is led by Jim Redwine - better known as Mr. Redwine – a tough-talkin’, bear-huggin’, makes no apologies father of four who has made extraordinary contributions to hundreds of kids. These kids are all eager to grow in the ranks and earn different colored caps for their efforts. I’ve started coming to Thursday Boys. However, I am not there to pass out snacks or cheer for my son, I’m there to play. The games include kick ball and dodge ball. It’s pretty rough and I often leave a little bruised and barely walking. However, I have been amazed how the kids have responded to my presence. They’re so happy I’m there and offer me such perks as the best-throwing dodge ball and tips for getting out the older kids. They share their animal crackers and fight over who sits next to me. Although I feel guilty seeing the volunteer moms who are passing out Dixie Cups and picking up trash, I am not willing to sacrifice my playing position for a traditional grown-up role. This experiment has encouraged me to find other ways to participate rather than observe my children’s activities. I have found that the only way to share in the memories with your kids is to actually partake in the moments. Who knows, I may even get a Red Cap out of the deal! |
