Not-So-Perfect Parent: Change in Perspective

There is a lot of power in perspective. One is capable of seeing a situation in a completely different light if they can muster a change in perspective. Although there are some circumstances where the silver lining is hard to spot, I believe most of life’s challenges can be seen as opportunities if you simply alter your point of view.

For the past few days, I have been feeling down. Overwhelmed by the details and struggling with confidence in my personal and professional life. I felt trapped in my reality – not seeing an end to my struggle. I know I am not alone. I think many mothers go through similar circumstances where they are feeling the burden of responsibility and a loss of identity.

However, a good friend of mine reminded me that wall I was behind was simply an illusion. I have not been imprisoned and my life can change based upon the power of choice and the power of perspective.

Since then, I have had a complete paradigm shift. I realized that my circumstances should not dictate my attitude, but rather my attitude should dictate how I view my circumstances. Eller Wheeler Wilcox beautifully illustrates my point when she writes,

"One ship sails East,
And another West,
By the self-same winds that blow,
Tis the set of the sails
And not the gales,
That tells they way to go."
