Not-So-Perfect Parent: Spring Break

With Spring Break around the corner, many parents are suffering. It’s bad enough that we can’t jet-set to the Caymans or spend the week at our mountain home. What’s worse is that we have to hear those annoying little words coming from our annoying little children… “I’m Bored!”

In addition to being the care giver, chauffer, cook, house keeper, homework helper, nurse and monster-in-the-closet terminator, we are also burdened with the responsibility of being our kids’ entertainer when school’s out. However, after much investigation, your Not-So-Perfect Parent has come up with some local Spring Break options that are easy on the pocket-book, fun for the kids and even a little educational.

Kimball Museum of Art- March 12 – 15, 10:00 – 12:00 $125: 817-877-1264

Let’s face it, most kids don’t know how to find Indiana on a map let alone Japan. The Kimball Museum of Art is hosing a Spring Break Art Camp that focuses on Japanese culture. Children will participate in art projects inspired by the special exhibition “Drama and Desire: Japanese Paintings from the Floating World”. In addition, other aspects of Japanese culture will be explored – like Japanese folk tales and Kabuki theatre.

Dallas Museum of Art March 12 – 16, 1:00 – 4:00 $150: 214-923-1253

Just think of it, our little Picasso with his very own portfolio! It’s possible if he attends Portfolio Ventures at the Dallas Museum of Art. Not only will your child have his very own collection of custom-created art, but he will also design and curate his first exhibition. On the last day, classmates and family members will be invited to view your child’s personal collection.

Museum of Nature & Science – March 12 – 16, 9:00 – 3:00 $165: 972-201-0602

If he’s into dinosaurs, they’ve got it. If she’s into stars (the ones in the sky, not in the movies), they’ve got it. Each day, kids explore nature in a real hands-on kind of way. Friday is reserved for “Gross Science” where kids learn about such yucky things like mold and creepy crawly bugs.

RCT School of Musical Theatre – March 12 – 16, 9:00 – 12:00 $250: 972-690-5029

For your little thespian, the Repertory Company Theatre will offer a Spring Break Musical Camp. If your child is dreaming of the Broadway lights, this camp will focus on singing and performance skills with songs from great Broadway composers.

It’s easy to diagnose. The sulking, the sighing, the whining. However, boredo m can be easily cured with any of the options provided. Plus, you can feel good knowing that your kids are being entertained by something other than video games and Sponge Bob. However, spaces are limited so sign-up before they succumb to boredom and get sucked into your sofa.
