What is it about change that’s so scary? At my age, you would think that change would be easier and I wouldn’t be as freaked out about the unknown. However, like all creatures of habit, I am much more comfortable when my crystal ball is cloud-free. Some people are better with change than others. They kinda go with the flow and don’t stress about the little things. Me? I like knowing my dinner plans before breakfast. I like knowing what to expect and I get irritated when things interrupt my routine. I think I have passed this character quirk down to my oldest. If there is a change in the daily plan, I try to prepare him hours in advance. God forbid someone else picks him up from school on my carpool day or we switch from Chick-Fil-Et to McDonalds for dinner. He really lays on the guilt if he is disappointed and I spend way too much time apologizing for veering from the plan. Although change produces anxiety, sleeplessness, and stomach cramps, I can honestly say that I consistently benefit from change. Breaking out of routine and trying something new is exhilarating. In the midst of my career change, I look to the future with my normal dose of fear and worry. However, there is a little giddy anticipation mixed in as well. True, I would much prefer knowing how the details will unfold, I am enjoying the exciting ride – unable to anticipate the next hill or quick turn. I hope to impart on my son the importance of breaking out of the comforts of routine and embracing change. After all, he loves roller coasters. |
