Not-So-Perfect Parent: Winter Blues, cont.

I guess Mother Nature decided to ignore my pleas and surprised us with yet another snow day. I whimpered a little thinking of another day locked in doors, with my children. To top it off, the cable wasn’t working leaving me without the internet and limiting our TV viewing to Barney videos.

I thought to myself, maybe this would be a wonderful time to do some arts and crafts projects. We could make some pipe cleaner animals or be creative with toilet paper rolls and glitter. However, the only art supplies I could come up with were old cans of Play-doh that had hardened into colored pieces of rock (just in case your curious, dipping hard Play-doh into water does not make it softer).

I started making phone calls. I called neighbors and invited them over for an impromptu pot-luck lunch. I could hear the relief in their voices. It was as if I gave them all a “Get Out of Jail Free” card as they enthusiastically accepted. The next thing I knew, I had fourteen adults and twenty children in my house.

The kids played outside and only entered when they were hungry or when a snowball hit them too hard in the face. The grown-ups were so relieved to talk to anyone other than their spouse and their children that they stayed for 5 hours before returning to their homes which felt more like prisons.

We had a wonderful day. These were amazing memories created for the kids and the grown-ups. I put the children to bed that night and we said our prayers. They thanked God for the winter weather and asked him for more snow. I prayed silently…. “Just not tomorrow, Lord”.
