| Not-So-Perfect Parent: Winter Blues, cont. »
Texas has been experiencing an "ice storm". For any northern friends that may be reading this, an ice storm in Texas means that there is a slight covering of frozen moisture on the roads causing the entire city to shut down. I have been locked in too long and I am experiencing a dose of “Climbing the Walls” syndrome. I can hardly take any more family time and I am desperate to get to the mall, to work, hell, to the dentist for a root canal – anything to get out of the house. And it’s not just me. My children are whining about being bored and are no longer entertained with seven hours of video games and Disney movies. This restlessness has caused the entire family to catch a big dose of winter blues. Enter Dr. Pete. Today’s segment on Winter Blues could not have been better timed. He gave some wonderful insights into the cause of Winter Blues and ways to prevent your children from having an all-out seasonal melt-down. Dr. Pete says that the lack of natural light combined with the reduced physical activity can lead to winter blues. He suggests that even if it is ten below, bundle up the kids and spend a little time outdoors. The air can be exhilarating and you still benefit from the sun even if you can’t see it. He also suggested maintaining a healthy diet – which, for my family is a bit of a challenge when yours truly believes the best way to get out of the doldrums is to eat a handful of Cheetos. I am going to make the best of it and pray that Mother Nature will not surprise us with another arctic blast. I don’t think my sanity or my thighs can tolerate another snow day. |
